PM Modi Opens Advanced Mother-Child and Neurosciences Centres at PGIMER

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Advanced Mother and Child Centre (AMCC) and the Advanced Neurosciences Centre (ANC) at PGIMER, Chandigarh on 17 July 2026, as part of healthcare projects worth about ₹1,200 crore. The ₹505-crore AMCC has 300 beds, advanced NICUs and modular OTs, and can manage over 6,000 high-risk deliveries a year. The ANC is a 300-bed facility uniting neurology, neurosurgery, neuroradiology and neurocritical care. Modi also laid the foundation stone for a 150-bed Critical Care Hospital Block.

Fairfax Emerges Preferred Bidder for IDBI Bank Stake

Canada-based Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited emerged as the preferred bidder to acquire a 60.72% stake in IDBI Bank in July 2026, a significant step in the government's long-pending strategic disinvestment of the lender. The Government of India and Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) together are divesting the 60.72% stake. Fairfax is led by India-born billionaire Prem Watsa.

India Hosts 12th BRICS Labour and Employment Ministers Meeting

Under India's BRICS Chairship 2026, the 12th BRICS Labour and Employment Ministers' Meeting concluded in Hyderabad, Telangana on 18 July 2026, convened under the theme "Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability." Union Labour & Employment Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya led the Indian side. The meeting adopted the BRICS Labour and Employment Ministers' Declaration and launched BRICS CONNECT, an India-proposed initiative for technical cooperation, skills forecasting, digital employment services and social security. The ILO Director-General commended India's social protection system for now reaching 1 billion people.

Greenfield Shipbuilding Cluster for Porbandar; Ship Repair Hub at Vadinar

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) granted in-principle approval for a Greenfield Shipbuilding Cluster in Porbandar and a Ship Repair Facility at Vadinar, both in Gujarat, under the Shipbuilding Development Scheme (SbDS). The cluster will come up on nearly 2,000 acres at Kuchhadi (Porbandar) with an annual capacity of 1.2–1.5 million gross tonnage. The ₹1,570-crore Vadinar repair facility — jointly developed by Cochin Shipyard Ltd (CSL) and Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) — will handle vessels up to 300 metres long. Both align with the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047.
