GSAT-7B, the Indian Army's First Dedicated Communication Satellite, Targeted for a Mid-2028 Launch
ISRO is targeting a mid-2028 launch for GSAT-7B, the Indian Army's first dedicated communication satellite, which will carry secure voice, data and video links for troops in high-altitude and border areas and reduce the Army's dependence on Air Force and civilian capacity. UNEP Emissions Gap Report 2026 'The Point of Return' Places India Third with 4.3 GtCO2e
The United Nations Environment Programme released the Emissions Gap Report 2026, subtitled 'The Point of Return', in October 2026. DRDO's DLRL Develops Man-Portable ELINT Modules to Detect Enemy Radars and Counter Drones
The Defence Electronics Research Laboratory (DLRL), Hyderabad, under DRDO, has begun developing man-portable Electronic Intelligence (ELINT) modules for radar identification, electronic warfare, emitter localisation and counter-drone operations. The system uses antennas and receivers to capture signals across frequency bands, with digital signal processing and machine learning separating overlapping emissions and identifying radar signatures. It continues a run of DRDO 2026 announcements that includes armour panels about 20% lighter than existing systems, which resist 30 mm armour-piercing ammunition and meet STANAG 4569 Level 6 protection for future main battle tanks, light tanks and Future Infantry Combat Vehicles, developed by R&DE(E), Pune.
UDAN Regional Connectivity Scheme Completes Ten Years with 687 Routes and 1.72 Crore Passengers
The Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik (UDAN) regional connectivity scheme completed ten years on 21 October 2026, having been launched on 21 October 2016 under the National Civil Aviation Policy 2016 and run by the Airports Authority of India for the Ministry of Civil Aviation. CEA Pegs India's Pumped Storage Potential at 345.38 GW as the Country Ranks Fourth Globally
The Ministry of Power and the Central Electricity Authority highlighted pumped storage projects (PSPs) in October 2026 as India works from the 300 GW of non-fossil capacity crossed in August 2026 towards 500 GW by 2030. The Ministry of Home Affairs has approved a restructuring of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) that replaces territorial supervision with sector-specific functional commands from 1 November 2026. An outbreak of Bud Rot, a fatal coconut palm disease caused by the pathogen *Phytophthora palmivora*, has struck Tiptur taluk of Tumakuru district, Karnataka, affecting villages including Mattihalli, Hosahalli and Halkurike and parts of the Nonavinakere and Kasaba hoblis. The disease rots the terminal bud and surrounding tissue; once the growing point is destroyed the palm cannot recover and must be removed.
