India Launches SHANTI Campaign for UN Security Council Non-Permanent Seat
India launched its official campaign for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council (UNSC) for the 2028-29 term. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar unveiled the campaign and the SHANTI vision at UN Headquarters, New York (announced 13 July 2026). SHANTI stands for Securing Holistic Advancement through Norms, Trust and Integrity, with pillars covering peacekeeping, maritime security, counter-terrorism and terror financing, responsible use of AI, sustainable development and reform of global institutions. India will contest the single Asia-Pacific Group seat against Tajikistan in elections due June 2027, requiring a two-thirds majority (at least 129 of 193 votes). It would be India's 9th stint on the Council.
