Blood relations is 37 of the 692 reasoning questions the Punjab Police SI has asked. It is the topic candidates most often try to do in their heads, and the topic where that fails most reliably. A sentence like the daughter of the only son of my mother's husband's father has four links in it, and four links are one more than working memory holds. So the rule for the whole chapter is one line long: draw it. Four marks on paper — a square for a man, a circle for a woman, a double line for a marriage and a vertical line for a parent — are enough for every one of the 37. The 37 come in three shapes. 12 describe a relationship in plain words. 13 encode it in symbols such as A ÷ B × C. 12 give a set of facts about a family and ask how two of them are related. All three are the same drawing.

HOW LONG THIS REALLY TAKES

The teaching part above and below — the explanations, the figures and the worked examples on screen — is about 13 minutes. The collapsed question banks hold 37 solved past questions in all; working through every one of them takes roughly 76 minutes. Do that across several sittings, not in one go.

Part 1 · The four marks

A notation you can draw in three seconds

The notation for every blood-relation question
Square for a man, circle for a woman, double line for a marriage, vertical line down to a child, horizontal line between siblings. Nothing else is ever needed.
KEY TERM
Generations

Draw people of the same generation on the same horizontal level, and put each child one level below its parents. Once the levels are right, the relationship almost names itself: same level and same parents is a sibling, one level up is a parent, two levels up is a grandparent, one level down and not your own child is a niece or nephew.

A worked three-generation tree
Drawn this way, G's relationship to A is read off rather than worked out: G is two levels below A, so A is G's grandfather.

Part 2 · Relationships described in words — 12 questions

Unpack the innermost phrase first

A long relationship phrase is built from the inside out, so it has to be read from the inside out. In the son of my father's only son, the innermost piece is my father's only son. If the speaker is male, that is the speaker himself, so the whole phrase is my son. Two short phrases are worth memorising because they appear again and again. The daughter of his father is his sister. My father's only son is me, when the speaker is a man, and is my brother when the speaker is a woman — which is why the question always tells you the speaker's gender, and why you should underline it. Relative clauses are the other trap. In A's mother, who is R's husband's sister, the word “who” refers to A's mother, not to A. Read the clause back to the noun it attaches to before using it.

Stuti told to Shivam, “The girl playing basketball is the younger sister of two brothers and the daughter of my father’s wife”. How is the girl playing basketball related to Stuti? (SI 20 Jun 2023)

  1. 1Brother
  2. 2Son
  3. 3Daughter
  4. 4Sister
Show answer

Answer: 4 — Sister

Unpack the description one clause at a time, always from Stuti's point of view since Stuti is the speaker. 'My father's wife' is Stuti's mother. So the girl is the daughter of Stuti's mother, which makes her Stuti's sister. The clause 'younger sister of two brothers' only tells us the girl has two brothers; it does not change her link to Stuti. Option 3 (Daughter) is the trap — the word 'daughter' appears in the sentence, but it describes the girl's relation to Stuti's mother, not to Stuti. Options 1 and 2 are ruled out at once because the person in question is stated to be a girl.

P is the father of Q's wife, who is R's husband. R is S's sister and T's daughter. How is Q related to T? (SI 21 Jun 2023)

  1. 1Father
  2. 2Husband
  3. 3Daughter-in-law
  4. 4Daughter's husband
Show answer

Answer: 4 — Daughter's husband

Untangle the sentence one link at a time. The relative clause 'who is R's husband' attaches to Q, so Q is R's husband and therefore R is Q's wife. P is the father of Q's wife, so P is R's father. R is T's daughter, and since R's father is already P, T is R's mother. Q is married to R, and R is T's daughter, so Q is the husband of T's daughter, that is T's son-in-law. Among the options that is 'Daughter's husband'. Option 3, daughter-in-law, is the trap: it is the same in-law link but read from the wrong side and with the wrong gender, since Q is male. ```puzzle:family P + = T - P + > R - P + > S R - = Q + ``` (+ marks male, − marks female, = marks a marriage, > marks a child.)

If Rani's mother is the daughter of Sonu's mother, then how is Rani related to Sonu? (SI 2 Jul 2023)

  1. 1Brother
  2. 2Sister's daughter
  3. 3Sister
  4. 4Father
Show answer

Answer: 2 — Sister's daughter

Sonu's mother's daughter is Sonu's sister. So Rani's mother is Sonu's sister, which makes Rani the daughter of Sonu's sister — a niece (ਭਾਣਜੀ). ```puzzle:family X - Y, parent X - Sonu, parent Y - Rani, parent ``` (X = Sonu's mother, Y = Rani's mother.) Options 1 and 4 are male and Rani is a girl's name in the stem's own wording; option 3 would need Rani and Sonu to share a mother, but they are a generation apart.

While introducing Reema, Ratnesh said, “Her father is my father’s only son”. How is Ratnesh related to Reema? (SI 9 Jul 2023)

  1. 1Father’s son
  2. 2Brother
  3. 3Father
  4. 4Son
Show answer

Answer: 3 — Father

Resolve the inner phrase first. Ratnesh is male, and 'my father's only son' means his father has exactly one son — which must be Ratnesh himself. So the sentence reads 'Reema's father is Ratnesh'. Therefore Ratnesh is Reema's father. Option 1, 'Father's son', is a restatement of the phrase inside the quotation, not of the relation asked for, and option 2, 'Brother', is the answer you get if you wrongly read the phrase as pointing to a different son.

G is the daughter of A. D is married to A. A is the son of B. E is married to B. B is the mother of F. How is G related to F? (SI 14 Jul 2023)

  1. 1Brother’s wife
  2. 2Brother’s daughter
  3. 3Father’s sister
  4. 4Mother’s sister
Show answer

Answer: 2 — Brother’s daughter

Take the statements in order. B is the mother of both A and F, because A is the son of B and B is the mother of F — so A and F are siblings. A is explicitly a son, that is male, so from F's point of view A is a brother. G is the daughter of A. Therefore G is the daughter of F's brother, i.e. F's brother's daughter. E is B's spouse and D is A's spouse; neither changes the link between G and F, they are only there to make the chain look longer. Option 1 (brother's wife) confuses G's generation — G is a daughter, not a spouse.

Pointing to a boy, Lakshmi said to Rani, “The mother of his father is the wife of your mother’s father.” How is Rani related to that boy? (SI 15 Jul 2023)

  1. 1Mother’s brother’s son
  2. 2Wife
  3. 3Father’s sister’s daughter
  4. 4Sister
Show answer

Answer: 3 — Father’s sister’s daughter

"The mother of his father" is the boy's paternal grandmother. "The wife of your mother's father" is Rani's mother's mother, i.e. Rani's maternal grandmother. The two are the same woman, so the boy's father and Rani's mother are children of one mother — brother and sister. Rani's mother is therefore the boy's father's sister, which makes Rani the boy's father's sister's daughter. "Sister" (option 4) would need Rani and the boy to share a father, which nothing states; option 1 describes the boy's relation to Rani, not Rani's to the boy.

If M is the brother of N; N is the sister of O; and O is the father of P, then how is N related to P? (SI 15 Jul 2023)

  1. 1Uncle (Father's brother)
  2. 2Bua (Father's sister)
  3. 3Masi (Mother's sister)
  4. 4Mama (Mother's brother)
Show answer

Answer: 2 — Bua (Father's sister)

Take the links in order. O is P's father, so P belongs to the generation below O. N is O's sister, so N is a woman of O's generation — that is, of P's father's generation. A sister of one's father is the paternal aunt, called bua in Punjabi. M is a decoy: he is N's brother and so P's paternal uncle (chacha/taya), which is what option 1 describes. Options 3 and 4 would need the link to run through P's mother, and no clue connects N to her.

If A is the brother of B, C is the daughter of A, D is the sister of A and E is the brother of C, then how is A related to E? (SI 29 Jul 2023)

  1. 1Brother
  2. 2Sister
  3. 3Mother
  4. 4Father
Show answer

Answer: 4 — Father

C is A's daughter, and E is C's brother, so E is another child of the same parents, that is, A's son. A is called the brother of B, which fixes A as male. A male parent of E is his father. Option 3 (Mother) is the trap for anyone who works out the parent relation but overlooks the word 'brother' that makes A male; D being A's sister is extra information that changes nothing.

Raman is the son of Vidya and Kishore. Rupa is the mother of Kishore and the wife of Gaurav. Manisha is the only daughter of Gaurav. How is Manisha related to Raman? (SI 31 Jul 2023)

  1. 1Mother
  2. 2Sister
  3. 3Father’s sister
  4. 4Father’s mother
Show answer

Answer: 3 — Father’s sister

Rupa is Kishore's mother and Gaurav's wife, so Gaurav is Kishore's father. Manisha is Gaurav's only daughter, so Manisha is Kishore's sister. Kishore is Raman's father, so Manisha is Raman's father's sister — his paternal aunt (bua). ```puzzle:family Gaurav +, Rupa -, married Gaurav + Kishore +, parent Gaurav + Manisha -, parent Kishore + Raman +, parent ``` 'Sister' is the trap: Manisha is one generation above Raman, a sister to his father and not to him.

I am a man. How is my mother-in-law's only daughter's mother-in-law related to me? (SI 31 Jul 2023)

  1. 1Daughter
  2. 2Mother’s sister
  3. 3Mother
  4. 4Sister
Show answer

Answer: 3 — Mother

Take the chain one link at a time. My mother-in-law is my wife's mother, so her only daughter is my wife. My wife's mother-in-law is my own mother. So the person is my mother. Option 2 (mother's sister) would need an extra generation-sideways link that the chain does not contain.

Pointing to a boy in a photograph, Shefali said, "He is the son of the only child of my grandfather". How is Shefali related to the boy in the portrait? (SI 31 Jul 2023)

  1. 1Sister
  2. 2Mother’s mother
  3. 3Mother’s sister
  4. 4Mother
Show answer

Answer: 1 — Sister

Shefali's grandfather has only one child, and that child must be Shefali's own parent (otherwise Shefali could not be the grandfather's grandchild). The boy is the son of that same parent, so the boy is Shefali's brother — which makes Shefali his sister. Option 4 (mother) tempts if you read 'only child' as Shefali herself, but then she would be speaking of her own father as her grandfather.

Part 3 · Coded relations — 13 questions

Expand every link in words before you answer

A coded expression such as P ÷ R × S + T is a sentence with the words replaced by symbols, and the key is printed above it. The only mistake worth worrying about is answering before the chain has been fully expanded. Expand left to right, one symbol at a time, writing each link as an English sentence and adding the person to your drawing as you go. By the time the last symbol is read, the answer is already on the page. Note which links are one-way: P is R's sister tells you P is female but says nothing about R's gender, and questions are built on exactly that gap. Sometimes only part of the chain matters — the question may ask about the two people at the left end. Read the question first and expand only as far as you need.

A coded chain expanded link by link
Three links, three English sentences, and the drawing builds itself as you write.
COMMON TRAPS
  • Treating a sibling symbol as a gender clue for both people. “P is the brother of Q” fixes P as male and leaves Q unknown.
  • Reading a relative clause onto the wrong noun. “A's mother, who is R's wife” describes the mother, not A.
  • Forgetting the speaker's gender. “My father's only son” is the speaker if he is a man and her brother if she is a woman.
  • Answering a coded chain halfway through. Expand every link before you look at the options, unless the question clearly needs only one end.
  • Assuming an in-law is a blood relation. A brother-in-law may be your sister's husband or your spouse's brother, and the two sit in different places on the tree.

In a code language, if 'A @ B' means 'A is wife of B' 'A $ B' means 'A is son of B' 'A > B' means 'A is brother of B' Which of the following means O is the son of N? (SI 16 Oct 2022)

  1. 1O $ M @ N
  2. 2N $ O > M
  3. 3M > O @ N
  4. 4N > O @ M
Show answer

Answer: 1 — O $ M @ N

Read each expression left to right, one symbol at a time. (A) O $ M @ N — "O is son of M" and "M is wife of N". So M is O's mother and N is M's husband, that is, O's father. Hence O is the son of N. This is what is asked. (B) N $ O > M — "N is son of O" and "O is brother of M". This makes N the son of O, the reverse of what is wanted. (C) M > O @ N — "M is brother of O" and "O is wife of N". Here O is a wife, so O is female and cannot be anyone's son. (D) N > O @ M — "N is brother of O" and "O is wife of M". Again O is female, and N is only O's brother. The usual slip is to read the symbols right to left, or to forget that @ fixes the gender of the person on its left. Once you note that O appears on the left of @ in both (C) and (D), those two are dead immediately.

'A # B' means that 'A is the brother of B'. 'A @ B' means that 'A is the daughter of B'. 'A & B' means that 'A is the husband of B'. 'A % B' means that 'A is the wife of B'. If 'R@T & S @ M % K # L % J', then how is M related to T? (SI 21 Jun 2023)

  1. 1Brother-in-law (Sister's husband)
  2. 2Mother-in-law (Wife's mother)
  3. 3Niece (Sister's daughter)
  4. 4Father-in-law (Wife's father)
Show answer

Answer: 2 — Mother-in-law (Wife's mother)

Read the chain symbol by symbol, but only the first three links matter. R@T: R is the daughter of T. T & S: T is the husband of S, so S is T's wife. S @ M: S is the daughter of M, so M is S's parent. Since the answer options name a woman's role for M's side only through 'Wife's mother', M is the mother of T's wife, that is T's mother-in-law (ਸੱਸ). Option 4 (Wife's father) fails because M is marked female by 'M % K' — M is the wife of K.

CHECK YOURSELF

'A # B' means 'A is the brother of B' 'A @ B' means 'A is the daughter of B' 'A & B' means 'A is the husband of B' 'A % B' means 'A is the wife of B' If 'L & K @ P # Q @ R & M', then how is Q related to K? (SI 29 Jun 2023)

  1. 1Brother's wife
  2. 2Mother's mother
  3. 3Mother
  4. 4Father's sister
Show answer

Answer: 4 — Father's sister

Decode the chain left to right: L & K — L is K's husband. K @ P — K is P's daughter, so P is K's father or mother. P # Q — P is Q's brother, so P is male; P is therefore K's father. Q @ R — Q is R's daughter, so Q is female. R & M — R is M's husband (R and M are Q's parents, and so P's parents too). Q is a female sibling of P, and P is K's father. So Q is K's father's sister — K's paternal aunt (bua). Option 3 (Mother) is wrong because K's mother is R's wife M, not Q; option 1 fails because Q is P's sister, not his wife.

CHECK YOURSELF

'A B' means 'A is the mother of B'. 'A + B' means 'A is the husband of B'. 'A ÷ B' means 'A is the son of B'. 'A − B' means 'A is the sister of B'. How is T related to Z in the expression 'K ÷ Q T − R ÷ Z'? (SI 29 Jun 2023)

  1. 1Mother's mother
  2. 2Mother
  3. 3Father's sister
  4. 4Daughter
Show answer

Answer: 4 — Daughter

Read the expression in pieces from the right, since that is where Z sits. R ÷ Z: R is the son of Z, so Z is a parent of R. T − R: T is the sister of R, so T and R share the same parents; therefore Z is also a parent of T. T is female because she is called a sister, so T is the daughter of Z. The earlier links K ÷ Q (K is the son of Q) and Q * T (Q is the mother of T) fix Q as T's mother, and they are only there to tempt you towards 'Mother' or 'Mother's mother'; neither describes T's relation to Z.

CHECK YOURSELF

In a certain code language, A + B means 'A is the father of B', A – B means 'A is the brother of B', A × B means 'A is the wife of B', and A ÷ B means 'A is the son of B'. On the basis of the above, how is F related to E if 'E ÷ G × H – D ÷ F + J'? (SI 1 Jul 2023)

  1. 1Brother
  2. 2Father’s father
  3. 3Father’s brother
  4. 4Father
Show answer

Answer: 2 — Father’s father

Break the chain into pairs and read each symbol. - E ÷ G — E is the son of G. - G × H — G is the wife of H, so H is E's father and G is E's mother. - H – D — H is the brother of D. - D ÷ F — D is the son of F, so F is D's parent. - F + J — F is the father of J, which fixes F as male. F is the father of D, and D and H are brothers, so F is also the father of H. H is the father of E. Therefore F is E's father's father, i.e. E's grandfather. ```puzzle:family F+, H+, D+, G-, E+, J F - H, parent F - D, parent F - J, parent H = G H - E, parent ``` The tempting wrong choice is option 4 (Father): F is a father, but of D, H and J — not of E, who is one generation lower.

Read the given information and answer the question asked. • 'P @ Q' means 'P is the sister of Q' • 'P $ Q' means 'P is the son of Q' • 'P % Q' means 'P is the wife of Q' • 'P # Q' means 'P is the husband of Q'. On the basis of the given information, how is E related to A if 'A % B $ C @ D # E'? (SI 2 Jul 2023)

  1. 1Mother-in-law's brother's wife
  2. 2Brother's wife's mother
  3. 3Father's sister's husband
  4. 4Sister's husband's father
Show answer

Answer: 1 — Mother-in-law's brother's wife

Read the chain link by link: - A % B — A is B's wife. - B $ C — B is C's son, so C is B's parent; C is female because the next link makes C someone's sister, so C is B's mother. - C @ D — C is D's sister, so D is B's maternal uncle. - D # E — D is E's husband, so E is D's wife. ```puzzle:family A -, B +, married C - B, parent C D, sibling D +, E -, married ``` A's husband is B, so A's mother-in-law is C, and E is the wife of C's brother D. E is therefore A's mother-in-law's brother's wife (in Punjabi, A's husband's ਮਾਮੀ). Option 4 would need E to be male, and options 2 and 3 run the chain in the wrong direction.

‘P $ Q’ means ‘P is the mother of Q’ ‘P % Q’ means ‘P is the son of Q’ ‘P @ Q’ means ‘P is the daughter of Q’ ‘P # Q’ means ‘P is the daughter-in-law of Q’ If T has only one child, then in the expression ‘R @ S # T $ U % V’, how is V related to R? (SI 3 Jul 2023)

  1. 1Father
  2. 2Son-in-law
  3. 3Grandfather
  4. 4Son
Show answer

Answer: 3 — Grandfather

Read the chain one link at a time. R @ S makes R the daughter of S. S # T makes S the daughter-in-law of T, so S is married to a child of T. T $ U makes T the mother of U, and since T has only one child that child is U — so S is married to U, and R is the daughter of U. Finally U % V makes U the son of V, so V is a parent of U. T is already U's mother, and the letters name different people, so V is U's father. V is therefore the father of R's father, which makes him R's grandfather.

‘A ~ B’ means ‘B is the granddaughter of A’; ‘A @ B’ means ‘B is the mother of A’; ‘A # B’ means ‘B is the husband of A’; ‘A B’ means ‘B is the wife of A’. If E has only one child, then in the expression ‘E F ~ G @ H # I’, how is E related to G? (SI 9 Jul 2023)

  1. 1Mother’s father
  2. 2Father
  3. 3Son
  4. 4Father’s mother
Show answer

Answer: 1 — Mother’s father

Unpack the expression one symbol at a time. 'E * F' means F is the wife of E, so E is male. 'F ~ G' means G is the granddaughter of F; since F is E's wife, G is E's granddaughter too. 'G @ H' means H is the mother of G. 'H # I' means I is the husband of H, so I is G's father. Now use the clue that E has only one child. G is E's grandchild through one of her parents, H or I, and that parent is E's single child. Since E is male, he could only be G's mother's father or G's father's father, and 'Father's father' is not offered; the option list offers 'Mother's father', which is consistent with H being E's only child. Option 4, 'Father's mother', is ruled out because E is male.

‘A # B’ means ‘A is the brother of B’ ‘A @ B’ means ‘A is the daughter of B’ ‘A & B’ means ‘A is the husband of B’ ‘A % B’ means ‘A is the wife of B’ If ‘Q @ H & S @ M % K # L % J’, then how is Q related to M? (SI 15 Jul 2023)

  1. 1Mother’s father
  2. 2Wife’s mother
  3. 3Son’s daughter
  4. 4Daughter’s daughter
Show answer

Answer: 4 — Daughter’s daughter

Decode the chain link by link; only its left end is needed. Q @ H → Q is the daughter of H, so Q is female. H & S → H is the husband of S, so S is Q's mother. S @ M → S is the daughter of M. M % K → M is the wife of K, so M is female, i.e. M is S's mother. Putting it together: M is Q's mother's mother, so Q is M's daughter's daughter. "Son's daughter" (option 3) would need S to be male, but M % K has already fixed M as female and S as her daughter; "Mother's father" reverses the direction of the question. The tail K # L % J is padding.

CHECK YOURSELF

'A # B' means that 'A is the brother of B'. 'A@B' means that 'A is the daughter of B'. 'A & B' means that 'A is the husband of B'. 'A % B' means that 'A is the wife of B'. If 'P # Q @ R & M @ L & K', then how is L related to Q? (SI 15 Jul 2023)

  1. 1Maternal grandfather (mother's father)
  2. 2Maternal grandmother (mother's mother)
  3. 3Father-in-law (husband's father)
  4. 4Sister-in-law (brother's wife)
Show answer

Answer: 1 — Maternal grandfather (mother's father)

Expand the chain one link at a time. P # Q: P is the brother of Q — this only tells us Q's sibling and is not needed. Q @ R: Q is the daughter of R. R & M: R is the husband of M, so M is Q's mother and R is Q's father. M @ L: M is the daughter of L. L & K: L is the husband of K, so L is male and K is M's mother. So L is the father of M, and M is Q's mother — L is Q's mother's father, that is Q's maternal grandfather (ਨਾਨਾ). Option 2 (maternal grandmother) is the trap: that role belongs to K, not L, because 'L & K' fixes L as the husband and therefore male.

CHECK YOURSELF

'A B' means 'A is the grandfather of B'. 'A + B' means 'A is the husband of B'. 'A ÷ B' means 'A is the son of B'. 'A − B' means 'A is the wife of B'. If M has only one child, then how is G related to P in the expression 'G − L ÷ M O + P'? (SI 29 Jul 2023)

  1. 1Mother-in-law
  2. 2Husband's sister
  3. 3Son-in-law
  4. 4Daughter-in-law
Show answer

Answer: 1 — Mother-in-law

Take the expression one link at a time. 'G − L' makes G the wife of L. 'L ÷ M' makes L the son of M, and since M has only one child, L is M's only child. 'M * O' makes M the grandfather of O, so O must be a child of M's only child L. 'O + P' makes O the husband of P, so O is male, that is L's son. G, being L's wife, is therefore O's mother, and P is O's wife — which makes G the mother-in-law of P. Option 4 (Daughter-in-law) reverses the direction of the relation, and option 2 would need G and P to be married into the same family as siblings-in-law, which the chain does not support.

  1. 1Son
  2. 2Father
  3. 3Mother's brother
  4. 4Brother
Show answer

Answer: 2 — Father

Read the chain one symbol at a time, left to right. D * E: D is the daughter of E. E ÷ A: E is the sister of A — so A is E's brother, a male. A + B: A is the husband of B. B − F: B is the mother of F. A is the husband of B and B is the mother of F, so A is F's father. Option 3 (mother's brother) is the trap: A is indeed the brother of E, but E is D's mother, not F's, so 'mother's brother' describes A's link to D, not to F.

Part 4 · Family tree puzzles — 12 questions

Fix the genders first, then the couples, then the children

Here you are given five or six facts about a family and asked how two members are related. The facts arrive in a deliberately unhelpful order, so take them in the order that fixes the most. Genders first. A clue like P is the son of Q fixes P as male. A clue like P is not the mother of D is just as useful — it usually means P is the father. Mark every person as a square or a circle before drawing a single line. Couples next. Any two people who are both parents of the same child are a married pair, and a marriage fixes two genders at once. Children last. Hang them below their parents on the same level as their siblings. When the tree is complete the question answers itself, and the second question on the same family costs nothing.

There are three male and three female members in a family. Nirav has a single child Kavya who is mother of Karthik's children. Misha is granddaughter of Purvi who is Kavya's mother. Meer is son of Karthik. How is Meer related to Nirav? (SI 18 Aug 2021)

  1. 1Grandfather
  2. 2Grandson
  3. 3Granddaughter
  4. 4Son
Show answer

Answer: 2 — Grandson

Build the tree from Kavya outwards. Kavya is Nirav's only child, and Purvi is Kavya's mother, so Nirav and Purvi are Kavya's parents — Nirav the father, Purvi the mother. Kavya is the mother of Karthik's children, so Karthik is her husband. Meer, being Karthik's son, is therefore Kavya's son as well, and Misha (Purvi's granddaughter) is Kavya's daughter. That fills the family exactly: Nirav, Karthik and Meer are the three males, Purvi, Kavya and Misha the three females. ```puzzle:family Nirav + Purvi - Nirav, Purvi, married Nirav - Kavya -, parent Purvi - Kavya, parent Kavya, Karthik +, married Kavya - Meer +, parent Kavya - Misha -, parent ``` Meer is the son of Nirav's daughter, so he is Nirav's grandson. Option 1 (Grandfather) reverses the direction of the relationship; option 3 (Granddaughter) has the right generation but the wrong gender, since Meer is stated to be a son; option 4 (Son) skips a generation — Nirav's only child is Kavya.

A family consists of seven members - Atharv, Arti, Aman, Aashi, Arav, Avni and Ayur. Aman is the father of Ayur and Avni. Aashi is the wife of Avni’s father. Atharv is the father of Arav. Avni is the wife of Arav. Arav is the son of Arti. How is Avni related to Ayur? (SI 18 Aug 2021)

  1. 1Mother
  2. 2Wife
  3. 3Sister
  4. 4Daughter
Show answer

Answer: 3 — Sister

Build the tree. Aman is the father of both Ayur and Avni, so they are his two children. 'Aashi is the wife of Avni's father' names Aashi as Aman's wife and therefore the mother of Ayur and Avni. On the other side, Atharv is the father of Arav and Arav is the son of Arti, so Atharv and Arti are a couple. Avni is the wife of Arav, which fixes Avni as female. Since Avni and Ayur are children of the same parents and Avni is female, Avni is Ayur's sister. Option 2 (Wife) is the trap fed by the Avni-Arav marriage, which relates Avni to Arav, not to Ayur. ```puzzle:family Atharv+, Arti-, Aman+, Aashi- Arav+, Avni-, Ayur+ Atharv = Arti Aman = Aashi Atharv - Arav, parent Arti - Arav, parent Aman - Avni, parent Aman - Ayur, parent Aashi - Avni, parent Aashi - Ayur, parent Arav = Avni Avni Ayur, sibling ```

G is the grandson of H, who is the husband of I. I is the mother of S, who is the brother of K. J is the wife of K, who is the father of G. How is H related to S? (SI 19 Aug 2021)

  1. 1Mother
  2. 2Grandmother
  3. 3Father
  4. 4Brother
Show answer

Answer: 3 — Father

Take the clauses one at a time, remembering that each 'who' refers to the person named immediately before it. H is the husband of I, so H is male. I is the mother of S, and S is the brother of K, so S and K are both children of H and I. K is the father of G and J is K's wife, which puts G in the third generation and matches the opening clause that G is H's grandson. ```puzzle:family H + I - H, I, married H - S +, parent I - S, parent H - K +, parent I - K, parent K, J -, married K - G +, parent ``` S is a child of the couple H and I, and H is the male of that couple, so H is the father of S. Options 1 and 2 are ruled out by H being a husband, and option 4 confuses S's own generation with the one above it.

In a family, M and N are sisters. B is the son of M. N is the mother of A. C is the son of A. D is the father of A. Which of the following statements is correct? (SI 19 Aug 2021)

  1. 1D is the grandfather of C.
  2. 2A is the son of M and N.
  3. 3B and A are brothers.
  4. 4M is the father of B.
Show answer

Answer: 1 — D is the grandfather of C.

Build the tree from the five facts. M and N are sisters, so they are both female and stand in the same generation. B is M's son and A is N's child, so B and A are cousins, one generation below. D is A's father, which places D in N's generation. C is A's son, one generation below A again. ```puzzle:family M - N - M N, sibling D + M - B +, parent N - A, parent D - A, parent A - C +, parent ``` Now test the options. D is A's father and C is A's son, so D is two generations above C on the direct line: D is C's grandfather, and option 1 is correct. Option 2 is wrong because A is the child of N alone, not of both sisters. Option 3 is the common trap — B and A are children of two sisters, which makes them cousins, not brothers. Option 4 is wrong on gender: M is a sister, so she is B's mother, not his father.

In a family of six persons B, A, G, C, D and Q. A has three children in which Q and C are daughters. B is mother of A’s children . If B’s son is married to G then who is husband of G? (SI 20 Aug 2021)

  1. 1A
  2. 2Q
  3. 3C
  4. 4D
Show answer

Answer: 4 — D

B is the mother of A's children, so A and B are the married couple of the older generation. Their three children include the daughters Q and C, so the third child — the son — must be one of the two people still unplaced, G or D. G is the person that son marries, so G is an in-law and cannot be the child. That leaves D as B's son. ```puzzle:family A + B - A, B, married A - Q -, parent A - C -, parent A - D +, parent B - Q, parent B - C, parent B - D, parent D, G -, married ``` Option 1 (A) is G's father-in-law, not her husband — this is the tempting answer if one reads 'B's son' as the head of the family. Options 2 and 3 (Q and C) are stated to be daughters.

In a family of seven members Aadil, Zeeshan, Sara, Ali, Zeenat, Fazal, and Aamir. Aadil is the single person of third generation. Ali and Zeenat are the elder couple of the family having three sons. Zeeshan is the only married son of Ali. Zeeshan has a son whose mother is Sara. Zeenat is mother of Fazal. Who is Zeenat’s husband? (SI 20 Aug 2021)

  1. 1Aamir
  2. 2Aadil
  3. 3Zeeshan
  4. 4Ali
Show answer

Answer: 4 — Ali

The stem states outright that Ali and Zeenat are the elder couple of the family, so Zeenat's husband is Ali; the rest of the data only has to be checked for consistency. Their three sons are Zeeshan, Fazal and Aamir; Zeeshan alone is married, to Sara, and their son Aadil is the only member of the third generation. That accounts for all seven people. ```puzzle:family Ali + Zeenat - Ali, Zeenat, married Ali - Zeeshan +, parent Ali - Fazal +, parent Ali - Aamir +, parent Zeenat - Zeeshan, parent Zeenat - Fazal, parent Zeenat - Aamir, parent Zeeshan, Sara -, married Zeeshan - Aadil +, parent Sara - Aadil, parent ``` Option 3 (Zeeshan) is Zeenat's son and Sara's husband — the trap for anyone who latches on to the only marriage described in detail. Options 1 and 2 are her son and her grandson.

In a family, H is daughter of A. M, A's sister has a son R and daughter S. C is mother of K. K is brother of H. How is H related to C? (SI 16 Oct 2022)

  1. 1Daughter
  2. 2Sister
  3. 3Brother
  4. 4Mother
Show answer

Answer: 1 — Daughter

Lay out only the facts that touch H and C: Fact  ·  What it gives H is daughter of A  ·  H is female; A is H's parent K is brother of H  ·  K and H are siblings, so they share parents C is mother of K  ·  C is the mother of K, hence also of H Since K and H are brother and sister, K's mother is H's mother. C is K's mother, so C is H's mother, and H — stated to be a daughter — is C's daughter. M, R and S are decoys: M is A's sister (H's aunt) and R and S are her children, H's cousins. They never enter the H-C link. Why the others fail: "Sister" would need H and C to share a parent, which nothing says; "Brother" is ruled out because H is explicitly a daughter, so H is female; "Mother" reverses the generation — C is the parent, not the child.

C, D, P, R, E, G and F are seven members in a family. P is not mother of D but D is son of P. C is married to P. E is the brother of P. F is brother of D. R is daughter of C. G is wife of E. How R is related to P? (SI 16 Oct 2022)

  1. 1Father
  2. 2Daughter
  3. 3Mother
  4. 4Sister
Show answer

Answer: 2 — Daughter

Fix the couple first. - "D is son of P" but "P is not mother of D" — so P is D's father: P is male. - "C is married to P" — so C is female, P's wife, and she is D's mother. - "R is daughter of C" — R is C's daughter; since C's husband is P, R is the daughter of P as well. R is therefore P's daughter. The rest of the cast is padding: E is P's brother (R's uncle), G is E's wife (R's aunt) and F is D's brother, that is, another son of C and P. Why the others fail: "Father" and "Mother" put R a generation above P, but R is a child of P's wife; "Sister" would need R and P to share parents, which nothing states — R shares parents with D and F, not with P.

A is the brother of B, and the son of C. D is the sister of B, and the daughter of E. C is the mother of D. How is E related to A? (SI 20 Jun 2023)

  1. 1Son (ਪੁੱਤਰ)
  2. 2Father (ਪਿਤਾ)
  3. 3Brother (ਭਰਾ)
  4. 4Husband (ਪਤੀ)
Show answer

Answer: 2 — Father (ਪਿਤਾ)

Build the family from the statements. - A is the son of C, and A, B and D are siblings, so C is the mother of all three (the statement 'C is the mother of D' confirms C is female). - D is also the daughter of E. Since D's mother is already C, the other parent E must be D's father. - E is therefore the father of all of C's children, including A. So E is A's father. Option 4 (Husband) is the trap: E is indeed C's husband, but the question asks about E's relation to A, not to C. Option 1 (Son) reverses the generation.

Rama is the sister of Sikha. Atul is the brother of Deepak. Sikha is the daughter of Atul. Deepak is the father of Bharat. How is Deepak related to Rama? (SI 3 Jul 2023)

  1. 1Father’s father
  2. 2Father
  3. 3Brother
  4. 4Father’s brother
Show answer

Answer: 4 — Father’s brother

Rama and Sikha are sisters, so whoever is Sikha's father is Rama's father too. Sikha is the daughter of Atul, therefore Atul is Rama's father. Atul is the brother of Deepak, so Deepak is the brother of Rama's father — her paternal uncle, i.e. father's brother. 'Father' is the tempting wrong choice, but Rama's father is Atul, not Deepak; 'Father's father' would require Deepak to be Atul's father, whereas the two are stated to be brothers. Bharat being Deepak's son is extra data that never enters the chain.

CHECK YOURSELF

A is the father of B; B is the sister of C; C is the father of D. How is A related to D? (SI 14 Jul 2023)

  1. 1Mother’s father
  2. 2Father’s mother
  3. 3Father’s father
  4. 4Mother’s mother
Show answer

Answer: 3 — Father’s father

Work the chain one link at a time and note each person's gender. A is the father of B, so A is male and one generation above B. B is the sister of C, so B and C are siblings, which means A is the father of C as well. C is the father of D, so C is male and D is one generation below C. Therefore A is the father of D's father, that is, D's father's father (paternal grandfather). The traps are options 1 and 4, which would require the link through D to be D's mother — but the statement says C is D's father, and C is male because 'B is the sister of C' does not make C female. Option 2 fails because A is male.

QUICK BYTES
  • Square = male, circle = female. Always.
  • Same level = same generation.
  • Read a long phrase from the inside out.
  • “Daughter of his father” = his sister.
  • “My father's only son” = me, if I am male.
  • “Brother of Q” fixes the brother's gender only.
  • “Who” attaches to the noun just before it.
  • Two parents of one child are a married couple.
  • “Not the mother of D” usually means the father.
  • Expand a coded chain fully before choosing.
