Free to read, with the worked answer and the exam each one came from. The book prints this topic in the order the Commission favours, so these are the ones to know first.
Choose the correct Synonym of the word given in Questions 1 to 3
Tranquil means calm, peaceful and free from disturbance, so its synonym is 'quiet'. 'Noisy' is its antonym, while 'boring' and 'musical' are unrelated in meaning.
Preposterous means so silly that it invites laughter — absurd or ridiculous. "Ludicrous" carries that same sense. Sensible, practical and rational all mean the opposite.
Inundated means flooded, i.e. swamped (R); a ruse is a trick (S); a cornucopia is an abundant supply, i.e. a plethora (P). The code is R S P. 'Suffocated' and 'sterility' match none of the words.
'Dogmatic' describes someone who lays down opinions as unquestionable truths and is inflexible in views, so its synonym is 'rigid'. 'Flexible', 'malleable' and 'lithe' all convey adaptability or suppleness and are near-antonyms of the word.
'Promiscuous' means indiscriminate, especially in sexual relationships, so its closest synonym is 'licentious', which means lacking moral restraint or sexual discipline. 'Controlled', 'serious' and 'thoughtful' all describe restraint or gravity, which is the opposite of promiscuity.
A 'conundrum' is a confusing or difficult problem, a riddle, so the closest word among the options is confusion. Flute, drum and loud are sound-related distractors that play on the '-drum' ending.
'Opprobrium' means harsh criticism or public disgrace, so its nearest synonym is criticism. Flattery is close to its opposite, 'admire' is a verb rather than a noun, and 'beauty' is unrelated.
Abolition means doing away with something completely. It is the formal ending of a law, practice or institution, as in the abolition of slavery. Among the choices only extermination, the complete wiping out of something, carries that sense. Fixation, instigation (stirring up) and inaction are unrelated.
Otiose means serving no practical purpose, futile or superfluous, so its synonym here is 'unnecessary'. It comes from the Latin otiosus, 'idle, at leisure'. 'Obese' is only a trap on the sound of the word, and 'necessary' is its opposite.
Salient means most noticeable or important, so its synonym is 'prominent'. 'Solitary' means alone and 'seasonal' relates to a season.

See the printed book →The Commission set 15 Synonyms questions across 11 papers between 2015–2026. That is the whole set, not a sample — every one of them is in the book, and the 10 most-asked are on this page free.
Not in this set — each of these 15 was set once in the years covered. Questions elsewhere in the book do repeat, and carry a badge saying how often.
Here. Every question on this page is a solved MCQ: the four options as printed, the correct answer, and a worked explanation in plain English — not just a letter. The rest of the 15 are in the book, in the same form.
Switch to Attempt mode at the top of the questions. You get one question at a time and it is marked the moment you pick an option, with the reason underneath — the same way the exam feels, on your phone.
The questions are on screen rather than in a downloadable file, so they stay current and correct. The printed book has all 15 of these plus the rest of the English section, and every buyer gets the whole thing online as well.
The exams behind these questions, most first. A paper here is a sitting: a question set in two papers of the same sitting counts once.
