2047.The nitrogenous supply of the soil is maintained when _____ is alternated with other crops.#
- AMoong
- BWheat

- DTea
All 6 Soil & Irrigation questions the Punjab PSC asked between 2016 and 2022, each with a worked answer and the exam it came from. First 10 free to read.
1 of these 6 were set in more than one exam — the Commission reuses this topic, which is the argument for working through it rather than skimming it.
Free to read, with the worked answer and the exam each one came from. The book prints this topic in the order the Commission favours, so these are the ones to know first.
Which of the statements given above are correct ?
Moong is a leguminous pulse; Rhizobium bacteria in its root nodules fix atmospheric nitrogen, so rotating it with cereals such as wheat restores the nitrogen content of the soil. Wheat, carrots and tea all draw nitrogen from the soil without replacing it.
Blue-green algae are cyanobacteria such as Anabaena, Nostoc and Aulosira. They fix atmospheric nitrogen in the waterlogged conditions of paddy fields, adding 20–30 kg N per hectare. The Azolla–Anabaena pair is used the same way. For wheat, maize and gram the usual biofertilisers are Azotobacter, Azospirillum and Rhizobium.
All three statements are correct. Chemical fertilisers are water-soluble, so their nutrients (N, P, K) are available to plants almost immediately, which is why they gave quick yield gains during the Green Revolution. Their continuous use, however, acidifies and salinises soil and kills beneficial bacteria and other micro-organisms, reducing soil fertility. As soils degrade, farmers need ever larger doses, so the cost of production rises in the long run.
Watershed development works on the ridge-to-valley principle. It uses contour bunding (earthen ridges built along a slope to hold water), check dams, trenches and afforestation. So it prevents soil runoff and erosion. It harvests rainwater and recharges groundwater. It also regenerates natural vegetation on treated catchments. That covers statements 1, 3 and 4. Statement 2 is wrong. Interlinking perennial and seasonal rivers belongs to the National River Linking Project. It has nothing to do with watershed treatment of a micro-catchment.
Soil structure is the arrangement of individual soil particles into aggregates (peds) such as granular, blocky, platy or prismatic units. Soil texture, by contrast, refers to the relative proportions of sand, silt and clay, while porosity and consistency are properties that depend on structure.
Nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) are the three primary macronutrients that plants need in the largest amounts; NPK fertilisers such as urea, DAP and muriate of potash supply them. Carbon, hydrogen and oxygen are taken from air and water, and sulphur is only a secondary nutrient.
The Commission set 6 Soil & Irrigation questions across 5 papers between 2016–2022. That is the whole set, not a sample — every one of them is in the book, and the 6 most-asked are on this page free.
Yes. 1 of these 6 were set in more than one exam, which is why they are worth working rather than reading. Each question here carries a badge showing how many sittings asked it.
Here. Every question on this page is a solved MCQ: the four options as printed, the correct answer, and a worked explanation in plain English — not just a letter. The rest of the 6 are in the book, in the same form.
Switch to Attempt mode at the top of the questions. You get one question at a time and it is marked the moment you pick an option, with the reason underneath — the same way the exam feels, on your phone.
The questions are on screen rather than in a downloadable file, so they stay current and correct. The printed book has all 6 of these plus the rest of the General Knowledge section, and every buyer gets the whole thing online as well.
The exams behind these questions, most first. A paper here is a sitting: a question set in two papers of the same sitting counts once.
