1141.A wheat merchant has four varieties of wheat – A, B, C, D with him. He mixed the entire quantity of the wheat of varieties A and B with him. With this mixture, if he mixes the entire quantity of wheat of variety C, which costs ₹ 20 per kg, the mixture so formed would cost ₹ 25 per kg. Instead, if he mixes with it the entire quantity of wheat of variety D, which costs ₹ 36 per kg, the mixture so formed would cost ₹ 31 per kg. If the entire quantity of wheat of variety D is thrice that of wheat of variety C, how much (in ₹) would the mixture of the entire quantity of wheat of all 4 varieties cost#

Solutions

10 answers · same numbers
1141.(A) ₹ 29.5 per kg

Let the A+B mix weigh m kg at ₹p per kg and variety C weigh c kg (so D weighs 3c). > With C: m(p − 25) = 5c; with D: m(31 − p) = 15c > Dividing: (p − 25)/(31 − p) = 1/3, so p = 26.5 and m = 10c/3 > All four: (10c/3 × 26.5 + 20c + 108c) ÷ (10c/3 + 4c) = 29.5 The full mixture costs ₹29.5 per kg.

1142.(D) 162 cm

Total height of the five = 160 × 5 = 800 cm; with the sixth person the total is 800 + 172 = 972 cm. > New average = 972 ÷ 6 = 162 cm Shortcut: the newcomer is 12 cm above the old average, and 12 spread over 6 people raises the average by 2 cm.

1143.(D) Rs. 252

Let the sixth man pay Rs. x. The five men together gave 5 × 35 = Rs. 175. > x = (175 + x)/6 + 35 > 6x = 175 + x + 210 → 5x = 385 → x = 77 > total = 175 + 77 = 252 So the six men contributed Rs. 252.

1144.(D) 29

If the average of 30 numbers is 0, their sum is 0. At most 29 numbers can be positive, with the single remaining number negative enough to cancel their sum (e.g., 29 ones and one -29). All 30 cannot be positive, as the sum would then exceed zero. Among the options, the maximum possible is 29.

1145.(B) 14 litres

Liquid B in the mixture = 10% of 70 = 7 litres. Let x litres of B be added. > (7 + x)/(70 + x) = 1/4 → 28 + 4x = 70 + x > 3x = 42 → x = 14 So 14 litres. Check: 21/84 = 25%.

1146.(D) 1 : 5

The mixture is sold at the price of pure milk, so the water added is pure profit. For a 20% gain the mixture must contain 20% more volume than the milk paid for. So milk : mixture = 100 : 120 = 5 : 6. > Let milk = 5 units → mixture = 6 units > water = 6 − 5 = 1 unit > water : milk = 1 : 5 By alligation: price of water 0, price of milk 1, mean price 1/1.2 = 5/6. That gives water : milk = (1 − 5/6) : (5/6 − 0) = 1 : 5.

1147.(D) 132

Take the third number as 2k, so the first is 6k and the second 3k. > 6k + 3k + 2k = 3 × 121 = 363, so k = 33 > First = 198, third = 66 The gap between them is 132.

1148.(D) ₹ 1650

Adding the manager raises the average of 17 people to ₹850. > Total of 16 workers = 16 × 800 = 12800 > Total of 17 = 17 × 850 = 14450 > Manager = 14450 − 12800 = 1650 So ₹1650. Shortcut: manager = new average + 16 × rise = 850 + 16 × 50 = 1650.

1149.(B) 3 : 4

Work out the two statements one at a time. > I: the group's total age rises by 8 × 2 = 16, so the two new boys total 21 + 23 + 16 = 60 and x = 30 > II: A + B + C now = 3 × 27 + 9 = 90; B + C now = 2 × 20 + 10 = 50 > y = 90 − 50 = 40 > 30 : 40 = 3 : 4

1150.(D) 30

> Sum = 25 × 3 = 75 > Ratio parts = 4 + 5 + 6 = 15, so one part = 75 ÷ 15 = 5 > Numbers = 20, 25, 30 The largest number is 6 × 5 = 30.
