The Tapti (Tapi) is one of only three major west-flowing peninsular rivers - with the Narmada and the Mahi - and like them it runs through a rift valley and empties into the Gulf of Khambhat through an estuary, not a delta. A rift valley gives steep gradients and swift flow, so the sediment is carried out to sea instead of being dropped at the mouth, and the funnel-shaped estuary is scoured by strong tides. The other three are east-flowing rivers that reach the Bay of Bengal across gentle gradients and build large deltas: the Mahanadi delta around Cuttack and Paradip, the Godavari delta around Rajahmundry, and the Ganga-Brahmaputra Sundarbans delta, the largest in the world.
