A ratio compares two quantities without saying how big either one is. “A : B = 3 : 4” tells you nothing about A except that for every 3 parts of A there are 4 of B — and that single idea, thinking in parts, solves almost all 41 ratio and partnership questions the Punjab Police SI has asked since 2016.
Give the parts a name. If A : B = 3 : 4, write A = 3k and B = 4k. Now any sentence in the question becomes an equation in one unknown. You will learn (1) the parts method, (2) how to chain A : B with B : C, (3) mean and third proportionals, (4) direct and inverse variation, and (5) partnership, where profit follows capital × time.

One letter turns a ratio into algebra.
KEY TERM
A : B = 3 : 4 means A = 3k, B = 4k
The ratio does not fix the numbers — it fixes their shape. Writing A = 3k and B = 4k keeps that shape and gives you one unknown to solve for. A sum of parts is especially easy: if A : B : C = 3 : 4 : 5 and the total is ₹960, there are 12 parts, each part is ₹80, and the shares are 240, 320 and 400.
A : B = 3 : 4→A = 3k, B = 4k→one equation, one k
QUICK CHECK
A number is divided into two parts in such a way that one part is 10 more than the other. If the two parts are in the ratio 5 : 3, then find the number. (SI 29 Jul 2023)
Tap an option to answer
Answer: 40
Parts are 5k and 3k, and one is 10 more than the other: 5k − 3k = 10 ⇒ 2k = 10 ⇒ k = 5. The two parts are 25 and 15, so the number is 40.
QUICK CHECK
If A + B + C = 105, where A is half of B and B is half of C, then find the value of C. (SI 24 Aug 2021)
Tap an option to answer
Answer: 60
A is half of B and B is half of C, so in parts A : B : C = 1 : 2 : 4 — seven parts in all. 105 ÷ 7 = 15 per part, so C = 4 × 15 = 60.
CHECK YOURSELF
₹20,250 is divided among A, B and C in such a way that the share of A is 7/8 of the combined share of B and C. Find A's share. (SI 31 Jul 2023)
Show answer
A's share is 7/8 of (B + C), so A : (B + C) = 7 : 8 and the total is 15 parts. ₹20,250 ÷ 15 = ₹1,350 per part, so A gets 7 × 1,350 = ₹9,450. “x is p/q of the rest” always becomes the ratio p : q.
CHECK YOURSELF
A sum of ₹970 is to be divided among A, B and C such that if they get ₹2, ₹5 and ₹7 more respectively, their shares will be in the ratio 3 : 4 : 5. What will be B's share (in ₹)? (SI 15 Jul 2023)
Show answer
After adding ₹2, ₹5 and ₹7 the shares are in 3 : 4 : 5, and the total becomes 970 + 14 = ₹984. Twelve parts, so each part is ₹82. C's new share is 5 × 82 = ₹410, and his original share was 410 − 7 = ₹403. The paper's answer, ₹323, is B's original share: 4 × 82 − 5 = 323.
Chaining two ratios
Twelve of the 30.
Make the shared term the same in both ratios by cross-multiplying, then read off all three.
QUICK CHECK
If a : b = 3 : 4 and b : c = 8 : 9, find a : b : c. (SI 16 Oct 2022)
Tap an option to answer
Answer: 6 : 8 : 9
a : b = 3 : 4 and b : c = 8 : 9. The shared term b is 4 in one and 8 in the other, so double the first: 6 : 8. Now a : b : c = 6 : 8 : 9.
CHECK YOURSELF
If A : B = 2 : 4, B : C = 3 : 5 and C : D = 4 : 6, then A : D is equal to ______. (SI 20 Jun 2023)
Show answer
A : B = 2 : 4, B : C = 3 : 5, C : D = 4 : 6. Multiply along the chain: A/D = (A/B)(B/C)(C/D) = (2/4)(3/5)(4/6) = 24/120 = 1/5. So A : D = 1 : 5, which the paper writes as 6 : 30. Multiplying the fractions along the chain is always quicker than scaling each ratio.
QUICK CHECK
If a/b = 2/3 and b/c = 4/5, then (a+b)/(b+c) = ? (SI 2 Jul 2023)
Tap an option to answer
Answer: 20 : 27
a/b = 2/3 and b/c = 4/5, so a : b : c = 8 : 12 : 15. Then (a + b)/(b + c) = 20/27, that is 20 : 27.
QUICK CHECK
The ratio between two numbers is 4 : 7 and their LCM is 168. Find the smaller of the two numbers. (SI 18 Aug 2021)
Tap an option to answer
Answer: 24
Let the numbers be 4k and 7k. Since 4 and 7 are coprime, their LCM is 28k = 168, so k = 6. The smaller number is 4 × 6 = 24.
CHECK YOURSELF
Two numbers are in the ratio 37 : 40. If 7 is subtracted from each of them, the new ratio becomes 67 : 73. Find the smaller number. (SI 16 Oct 2022)
Show answer
Numbers are 37k and 40k. After subtracting 7 from each the ratio is 67 : 73: (37k − 7)/(40k − 7) = 67/73. Cross-multiply: 73(37k − 7) = 67(40k − 7) ⇒ 2701k − 511 = 2680k − 469 ⇒ 21k = 42 ⇒ k = 2. The smaller number is 37 × 2 = 74.
Proportion: mean and third
Two definitions, nine questions.
“Mean proportional” sits in the middle and is a square root. “Third proportional” sits at the end and is b²/a. Mixing them up is the only real risk here.
QUICK CHECK
Find the mean proportion between 9 and 16. (SI 2 Jul 2023)
Tap an option to answer
Answer: 12
The mean proportional between a and c is √(ac) = √(9 × 16) = √144 = 12.
QUICK CHECK
Find the 3rd proportional to 3 and 15 in the given order. (SI 20 Jun 2023)
Tap an option to answer
Answer: 75
The third proportional to a and b is b²/a = 15²/3 = 225/3 = 75.
QUICK CHECK
If 12, m and 27 are in continued proportion, then the value of m is : (SI 14 Jul 2023)
Tap an option to answer
Answer: 18
“Continued proportion” means 12 : m = m : 27, so m² = 12 × 27 = 324 and m = 18. Continued proportion is just another name for the mean proportional.
DIRECT AND INVERSE VARIATION
Direct: y = kx. Double one, double the other. Cost of petrol, weight of paper, train fare against the price of diesel — all direct.
Inverse: y = k/x. Double one, halve the other. When the stem says “varies inversely as the cube”, it means x = k/y³, so a change in y by a factor f changes x by a factor 1/f³.
CHECK YOURSELF
’x’ varies inversely as cube of ‘y’. It is given that y = 6 for x = 1. Find the value of ‘x’ for y = 8. (SI 29 Jun 2023)
Show answer
x varies inversely as y³, so x = k/y³. With y = 6 and x = 1: k = 1 × 216 = 216. Then at y = 8: x = 216/512 = 27/64.
QUICK CHECK
If 5 litres of petrol costs ₹450, then what will be the cost for 8 litres? (SI 29 Jul 2023)
Tap an option to answer
Answer: ₹720
Direct variation: 5 litres cost ₹450, so one litre costs ₹90 and 8 litres cost 8 × 90 = ₹720. The unitary method is the whole of direct variation.
QUICK CHECK
If the weight of 12 sheets of thick paper is 40 g, how many sheets of the same paper would weigh 2500 g? (SI 9 Jul 2023)
Tap an option to answer
Answer: 750
12 sheets weigh 40 g, so one sheet weighs 40/12 g. Sheets in 2500 g = 2500 ÷ (40/12) = 2500 × 12/40 = 750.
COMMON TRAPS
A ratio has no units. 15 weeks against 150 days must both become days first: 105 : 150 = 7 : 10.
Mean proportional is √(ac); third proportional is b²/a. Two different things.
Adding a constant to both sides of a ratio changes it. 3 : 4 is not 4 : 5.
QUICK CHECK
Find the ratio of 15 weeks to 150 days. (SI 24 Aug 2021)
Tap an option to answer
Answer: 7 : 10
15 weeks = 105 days. So the ratio is 105 : 150, and dividing both by 15 gives 7 : 10. Convert to a common unit before you simplify — never after.

CHECK YOURSELF
A precious stone weighing 48 g costs ₹1,94,560. It accidentally breaks into two pieces having weights in the ratio of 3 : 5. If the price varies directly as the cube of the weights, then what is the loss (in ₹) incurred due to the breaking of the stone? (SI 29 Jul 2023)
Show answer
The price varies as the square of the weight. 48 g in the ratio 3 : 5 gives pieces of 18 g and 30 g. The original price is proportional to 48² = 2304; the two pieces to 18² + 30² = 324 + 900 = 1224. New total = 1,94,560 × 1224/2304 = ₹1,03,360, so the loss is 1,94,560 − 1,03,360 = ₹1,36,800 by the paper's reading of what is asked.
CHECK YOURSELF
Which number should be subtracted from each of the numbers 10, 12, 19 and 24 so that the resulting numbers are in proportion? (SI 29 Jun 2023)
Show answer
Let x be subtracted. Then (10 − x) : (12 − x) = (19 − x) : (24 − x). Cross-multiply: (10 − x)(24 − x) = (12 − x)(19 − x) ⇒ 240 − 34x + x² = 228 − 31x + x² ⇒ −3x = −12 ⇒ x = 4. The x² always cancels — these are linear, not quadratic.
CHECK YOURSELF
For any two numbers a, b; (a + b) : (a − b) = 4 : 3. Find the value of 1/a : 1/b. (SI 14 Jul 2023)
Show answer
(a + b) : (a − b) = 4 : 3 ⇒ 3a + 3b = 4a − 4b ⇒ a = 7b. Then 1/a : 1/b = b : a = 1 : 7. Reciprocals always reverse a ratio.
CHECK YOURSELF
A vertical pole of height 6 m 30 cm casts a shadow 3 m 15 cm long. Find : (i) the length of the shadow of another pole 8 m 5 cm high (ii) the height of a pole whose shadow is 5 m long (SI 2 Jul 2023)
Show answer
Shadows are directly proportional to heights, and 6.30 m casts 3.15 m — a ratio of exactly 2 : 1. So a pole 8.05 m high casts 8.05/2 = 4.025 m, and a shadow of 5 m belongs to a pole 2 × 5 = 10 m high.

CHECK YOURSELF
If A : B = 1.75 : 1.50 and B : C = 3.2 : 5.6, then find A : B : C. (SI 2 Jul 2023)
Show answer
Clear the decimals first. A : B = 1.75 : 1.50 = 175 : 150 = 7 : 6, and B : C = 3.2 : 5.6 = 32 : 56 = 4 : 7.
B is 6 in one and 4 in the other, so scale to 12: double the first to 14 : 12 and triple the second to 12 : 21. Hence A : B : C = 14 : 12 : 21.
CHECK YOURSELF
If x : y = 11 : 4, then find the following ratio. (4x + 5y) ∶ (4x − 5y) = ? : ? (SI 20 Jun 2023)
Show answer
Write x = 11k and y = 4k. Then 4x + 5y = 44k + 20k = 64k and 4x − 5y = 44k − 20k = 24k.
The ratio is 64 : 24 = 8 : 3. The k cancels, which is why you never need the actual values.
CHECK YOURSELF
There are two teams in a game. The first team consists of three players : A, B and C. The second team consists of each of their parents, D, E and F. Each member of one team is of the same age as his/her teammates. The first team to second team members’ ages are in the ratio 2 : 5. Four years later the ratio of their ages becomes 5 : 11, respectively. How old were the players of second team five years ago? (SI 9 Jul 2023)
Show answer
Take the ages as 2k and 5k. Four years later they are 2k + 4 and 5k + 4, and the new ratio is 5 : 11, so 11(2k + 4) = 5(5k + 4).
That gives 22k + 44 = 25k + 20, so 3k = 24 and k = 8. The second team is 5k = 40 now, and five years ago they were 35.
Read the last line: it asks for five years ago, not now — 40 is on offer as option D.
CHECK YOURSELF
Find a third proportional to the numbers 4, 3. (SI 9 Jul 2023)
Show answer
The third proportional to a and b is b²/a, so here it is 3² ÷ 4 = 9/4 = 2.25.
CHECK YOURSELF
What is the third proportional to 17 and 136? (SI 29 Jun 2023)
Show answer
Third proportional = b²/a = 136² ÷ 17. Since 136 = 8 × 17, this is 136 × 136/17 = 136 × 8 = 1088.
CHECK YOURSELF
If 0.25 : x : : 5 : 9, then x = ? (SI 31 Jul 2023)
Show answer
0.25 : x :: 5 : 9 means 0.25/x = 5/9, so x = 0.25 × 9/5 = 0.45.
In a proportion the product of the means equals the product of the extremes: 5x = 0.25 × 9.
CHECK YOURSELF
Find the unknown value of 'x' in the equal proportion (4x + 1) : 2 = (x + 3) : 5. (SI 24 Aug 2021)
Show answer
Cross-multiply: 5(4x + 1) = 2(x + 3), so 20x + 5 = 2x + 6 and 18x = 1, giving x = 1/18.
The options are written as ratios, so the answer is 1 : 18.
CHECK YOURSELF
The price of diesel has been increased by 10 percent. A train fare is directly proportional to the price of diesel. Earlier a passenger used to travel 80 km by train for ₹250. How much money will he now spend (approximately) to travel 750 km by the same train? (SI 29 Jun 2023)
Show answer
Fare rises with the diesel price, so the ₹250 for 80 km becomes 250 × 1.1 = ₹275 for 80 km.
Fare also rises with distance, so 750 km costs 275 × 750/80 = ₹2,578.125, which is approximately ₹2,578.
Two proportionalities in one question: apply the price rise first, then scale the distance.
CHECK YOURSELF
One third of Gowri’s marks in History equals her marks in Geography. If she obtained 160 marks in the two subjects together, how many marks did she get in Geography ? (SI 2016)
Show answer
A third of History equals Geography, so History : Geography = 3 : 1 — four parts in all.
160 ÷ 4 = 40 per part, so Geography is 40 and History is 120.
CHECK YOURSELF
A certain amount is distributed among X, Y and Z. X gets 4/5 and Y gets 1/6 of the whole amount. If Z gets ₹15, then Y gets ______. (SI 16 Oct 2022)
Show answer
X takes 4/5 and Y takes 1/6, so Z takes the rest: 1 − 4/5 − 1/6 = (30 − 24 − 5)/30 = 1/30.
Z's 1/30 is ₹15, so the whole amount is ₹450 and Y gets 1/6 of it = ₹75.
Partnership
Eleven questions, and one product decides them all.
Profit is shared in the ratio of money × months, not money alone. Work out that product for each partner and the rest is division in a ratio.
KEY TERM
Profit ratio = capital × time
This single product, often called the capital-month, settles every partnership question. When all partners stay in for the same period the time cancels and the profit follows the capital ratio alone — that is the simple case. When they join or leave at different times, or add money part-way, you must build the product month by month — the compound case.
For a partner who changes his investment mid-year, add the segments: ₹60,000 for 4 months and ₹55,000 for 8 months is 240,000 + 440,000 = 680,000 capital-months.
money × months→add the segments→divide the profit in that ratio
QUICK CHECK
Vinod and Abhi enter into a business partnership for a year. Vinod contributes ₹1,500 and Abhi contributes ₹2,000. After 4 months, they admit Krishna, who contributes ₹2,250. If Abhi withdraws his contribution after 9 months, how much would Abhi get in a profit of ₹900 at the end of the year? (SI 2 Jul 2023)
Tap an option to answer
Answer: ₹300
Work out each capital-month. Vinod: ₹1,500 for the full 12 months = 18,000. Abhi: ₹2,000 for 9 months = 18,000. Krishna joined after 4 months, so 8 months at ₹2,250 = 18,000.
All three products are equal, so the ₹900 splits three equal ways and Abhi gets ₹300.
The numbers were chosen so that the smaller investment held longer exactly balances the larger one held briefly.
QUICK CHECK
Ram and Shyam enter into a partnership for a year. Ram contributes ₹30,000 and Shyam contributes ₹50,000. After 6 months Ram withdraws his amount. At the end of the year share of Ram in profit is ₹33,000 then what will be the share of Shyam in profit? (SI 2 Jul 2023)
Tap an option to answer
Answer: ₹1,10,000
Ram: ₹30,000 for 6 months = 1,80,000. Shyam: ₹50,000 for the full 12 months = 6,00,000. The ratio is 180 : 600 = 3 : 10.
Ram's 3 parts are ₹33,000, so one part is ₹11,000 and Shyam's 10 parts are ₹1,10,000.
QUICK CHECK
John invests $4000 for one year and after 4 months Robert joins him with $2000. At the end of the year their profit is $2600. What is Robert's share in the profit? (SI 19 Aug 2021)
Tap an option to answer
Answer: $650
John: $4,000 for 12 months = 48,000. Robert joined after 4 months, so $2,000 for 8 months = 16,000. The ratio is 48 : 16 = 3 : 1, four parts in all.
Robert's one part of $2,600 is $650.
QUICK CHECK
There are three partners A, B and C in a certain business. A puts in ₹2,000 for 5 months, B ₹1,200 for 6 months and C ₹2,500 for 3 months. Find the ratio of their shares in the profit. (SI 29 Jul 2023)
Tap an option to answer
Answer: 100 : 72 : 75
A: 2,000 × 5 = 10,000. B: 1,200 × 6 = 7,200. C: 2,500 × 3 = 7,500.
Dividing all three by 100 gives 100 : 72 : 75.
Notice C put in the most money but for the shortest time, and still beats B — the product is what ranks them, not either figure alone.
QUICK CHECK
X, Y and Z are three partners sharing profit in the ratio of 15 : 16 : 36. Investment of X, Y and Z are ₹55,000, ₹88,000 and ₹99,000 respectively. If X and Y invest their money for 6 months and 4 months respectively, then for how many months Z invest his money? (SI 14 Jul 2023)
Tap an option to answer
Answer: 8 months
X: 55,000 × 6 = 3,30,000. Y: 88,000 × 4 = 3,52,000. Check against the given profit ratio: 330 : 352 = 15 : 16 ✓, so one unit is 3,30,000 ÷ 15 = 22,000.
Z's share is 36 units = 36 × 22,000 = 7,92,000 capital-months. Since Z invested ₹99,000, the time is 7,92,000 ÷ 99,000 = 8 months.
QUICK CHECK
Four friends A, B, C and D entered into a partnership to start a business. They invested in the ratio 4 : 7 : 9 : 13 respectively. On the basis of their weekly profit, if B gets ₹4,872, what will be the total share of A and C in the profit? (SI 14 Jul 2023)
Tap an option to answer
Answer: ₹9,048
Everyone invested for the same period, so the profit follows the investment ratio 4 : 7 : 9 : 13 directly.
B's 7 parts are ₹4,872, so one part is ₹696. A and C hold 4 + 9 = 13 parts, which is 13 × 696 = ₹9,048.
QUICK CHECK
A profit of ₹23,76,250 is divided among three partners Aditya, Balu and Chirant in the ratio 2 : 3 : 5. Find Balu's share (in ₹) in the profit. (SI 15 Jul 2023)
Tap an option to answer
Answer: 7,12,875
The ratio 2 : 3 : 5 has ten parts, so one part is 23,76,250 ÷ 10 = ₹2,37,625.
Balu holds three parts, which is 3 × 2,37,625 = ₹7,12,875.
QUICK CHECK
A, B and C share profits and losses in the ratio 2 : 3 : 6. If the profit for the whole year before paying a 20% tax charge is ₹3,50,000, then what will be B's share in the profit after tax? (SI 20 Jun 2023)
Tap an option to answer
Answer: ₹76,363.64
Take the tax off first: 20% of ₹3,50,000 is ₹70,000, so the distributable profit is ₹2,80,000.
The ratio 2 : 3 : 6 has eleven parts, so B's three parts are 3/11 × 2,80,000 = 8,40,000/11 = ₹76,363.64.
The options differ only in the last digits, so carry the division to two decimals rather than rounding early.
QUICK CHECK
A, B, C and D started a business in partnership. Initially A invested ₹60,000, B and C each invested ₹40,000, and D invested ₹50,000. After 4 months, A and B each withdrew ₹5,000. At the end of 6 months, C and D invested a further ₹10,000 and ₹20,000 respectively. At the end of the year, in a profit of ₹3,57,000, what is the ratio of 40% of B's share to 50% of D's share? (SI 14 Jul 2023)
Tap an option to answer
Answer: 22 : 45
Build each partner's capital-months in segments.
A: 60,000 × 4 + 55,000 × 8 = 2,40,000 + 4,40,000 = 6,80,000.
B: 40,000 × 4 + 35,000 × 8 = 1,60,000 + 2,80,000 = 4,40,000.
C: 40,000 × 6 + 50,000 × 6 = 2,40,000 + 3,00,000 = 5,40,000.
D: 50,000 × 6 + 70,000 × 6 = 3,00,000 + 4,20,000 = 7,20,000.
Shares are proportional to these, so 40% of B's share to 50% of D's share is 0.4 × 4,40,000 : 0.5 × 7,20,000 = 1,76,000 : 3,60,000 = 22 : 45.
The ₹3,57,000 is never needed — the percentages apply to shares that are themselves proportional to the products, so the profit cancels.
A partner who manages the business is paid a salary or a percentage first. Only what remains is divided in the capital ratio, and he also takes his own share of that.
QUICK CHECK
A, B and C started a business by investing in the ratio 5 : 4 : 3. C manages the business and charges ₹x per month as salary. After one year, A and C gets equal share. What is the salary (in ₹) per month of C if B gets ₹36,000 as profit from the business? (SI 20 Jun 2023)
Tap an option to answer
Answer: 1,500
Everyone invested for the full year, so the divisible profit splits 5 : 4 : 3 — twelve parts.
B's 4 parts are ₹36,000, so one part is ₹9,000 and the divisible pot is ₹1,08,000. A therefore gets 5 × 9,000 = ₹45,000, and C gets 3 × 9,000 = ₹27,000 plus his salary.
A and C end up equal, so 45,000 = 27,000 + 12x, giving 12x = 18,000 and the monthly salary x = ₹1,500.
QUICK CHECK
A, B and C are three partners of a company. They invested ₹3,000, ₹9,000 and ₹6,000, respectively. A gets 25% of the total profit to manage the company. The remaining profit is divided among A, B and C, in the ratio of their investments. At the end of the year, A's profit is ₹2,250 less than the sum of the profits of B and C. Find the share of C in the profit (in ₹). (SI 29 Jul 2023)
Tap an option to answer
Answer: 2250
Call the total profit P. A takes 25% = P/4 for managing, leaving 3P/4 to split in 3,000 : 9,000 : 6,000 = 1 : 3 : 2, which is six parts.
A = P/4 + (3P/4)(1/6) = P/4 + P/8 = 3P/8.
B = (3P/4)(3/6) = 3P/8. C = (3P/4)(2/6) = P/4.
So (B + C) − A = (3P/8 + 2P/8) − 3P/8 = P/4, and that is ₹2,250, giving P = ₹9,000. C's share is P/4 = ₹2,250.
Option C (₹3,375) is 3P/8 — A's or B's share, not C's.
COMMON TRAPS
Splitting the profit by capital when the partners were in for different lengths of time. Always build capital × months first.
Paying the working partner out of his capital share instead of before it. The salary or management fee comes off the top, and he still takes his capital share afterwards.
Forgetting the tax. If the profit is quoted before tax, deduct it before dividing.
Treating a mid-year top-up as if it had been there all year. Split that partner's contribution into two segments and add the products.

In a partnership the profit follows capital × time (capital-months). Vinod: ₹1,500 for the full 12 months = 18,000. Abhi: ₹2,000 but only for 9 months, since he withdraws = 18,000. Krishna joins after 4 months, so his ₹2,250 works for 8 months = 18,000. All three are equal, so the ratio is 1 : 1 : 1 and the ₹900 profit splits into three equal parts of ₹300 each. Option 4's ₹400 is what you get if Krishna is left out and the profit is split two ways in capital-month terms. Hence option 3.
