Solutions

10 answers · same numbers
102.(A) Gahirmatha Beach, Orissa

Gahirmatha beach is in Kendrapara district of Odisha, in the Bhitarkanika region. It is the world's largest rookery for the mass nesting ('arribada') of Olive Ridley turtles. The Rushikulya and Devi river mouths in Odisha are other nesting sites.

103.(B) Botanical Garden

In-situ conservation protects species in their natural habitat — biosphere reserves, national parks, wildlife sanctuaries and sacred groves. A botanical garden keeps plants outside their natural habitat, so it is an ex-situ method, along with zoos, seed banks and gene banks.

104.(B) 1&3

India has parts of four of the world's biodiversity hotspots: the Western Ghats (with Sri Lanka), the Himalaya, Indo-Burma (the North-East) and Sundaland (Nicobar Islands). In the standard listing the Himalayan hotspot is identified with the Eastern Himalaya, which is far richer in endemic species; the Eastern Ghats and the Western Himalaya are not named as hotspots. So only 1 and 3.

105.(C) Core zone

Under UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere (MAB) framework, a biosphere reserve has three zones. The core zone is strictly protected. It conserves landscapes, ecosystems, species and genetic variation. The buffer zone around it allows research, monitoring and training. The outer transition zone allows sustainable human activity and settlements. India has 18 biosphere reserves. Of these, 12 are on the UNESCO World Network, starting with Nilgiri in 2000.

106.(B) Bihar

The Vikramshila Gangetic Dolphin Sanctuary lies on the Ganga between Sultanganj and Kahalgaon in Bhagalpur district, Bihar. It is India's only sanctuary for the Gangetic dolphin, our National Aquatic Animal.

107.(B) Odisha

Bhitarkanika National Park lies in Kendrapara district of Odisha, in the delta of the Brahmani and Baitarani rivers. It is India's second-largest mangrove ecosystem after the Sundarbans, is known for its saltwater crocodiles, and was designated a Ramsar wetland in 2002. The adjoining Gahirmatha beach is the mass-nesting site of Olive Ridley turtles.

108.(D) Forests

Silviculture is the science of growing, tending and managing forest trees and stands to meet timber, ecological and conservation goals; the word comes from Latin silva (forest). Related terms: limnology deals with lakes, potamology with rivers and horticulture with garden crops.

109.(A) Gujarat

Gir National Park and Sanctuary is in Gujarat, in the Saurashtra region around Junagadh. It is the only natural home of the Asiatic lion in the world. In 2018 more than 20 lions there died of canine distemper virus infection.

110.(B) Himachal Pradesh

Chandra Taal (Chandratal), a high-altitude lake at about 4,300 m in the Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh, was designated a Ramsar wetland in 2005. Himachal's other Ramsar sites are Renuka and Pong Dam lake.

111.(B) Bihar

Bihar holds roughly half of India's Gangetic river dolphins. They live in the Ganga and its tributaries, such as the Gandak and Kosi. The Vikramshila Gangetic Dolphin Sanctuary at Bhagalpur is the country's only dolphin sanctuary. The Gangetic dolphin was declared India's National Aquatic Animal in 2009. Patna was later chosen for the National Dolphin Research Centre.

Are PPSC Biodiversity, Wildlife & Protected Areas questions repeated?

Where can I get Biodiversity, Wildlife & Protected Areas MCQs with answers and solutions?

Which papers asked Biodiversity, Wildlife & Protected Areas

The exams behind these questions, most first. A paper here is a sitting: a question set in two papers of the same sitting counts once.
