ਦਫ਼ਤਰੀ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਵਲੀ ਵਿੱਚ Copy = ਉਤਾਰਾ ਜਾਂ ਨਕਲ, Attached = ਨੱਥੀ ਅਤੇ Ready reference = ਤੁਰੰਤ ਹਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਲਈ 'Copy attached for ready reference' ਦਾ ਸਹੀ ਅਨੁਵਾਦ ਹੈ 'ਤੁਰੰਤ ਹਵਾਲੇ ਲਈ ਉਤਾਰਾ ਨੱਥੀ ਹੈ'। ਬਾਕੀ ਵਿਕਲਪਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ 'ਹਵਾਲਾ ਨੱਥੀ ਹੈ' ਜਾਂ 'ਸੰਦਰਭ ਨੱਥੀ ਹੈ' ਲਿਖ ਕੇ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਂ ਦੀ ਥਾਂ ਬਦਲ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਗਈ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਨਾਲ ਅਰਥ ਬਦਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
'Prodigality' ਦਾ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਅਰਥ ਫਜ਼ੂਲ ਖ਼ਰਚੀ ਹੈ, ਭਾਵ ਬੇਲੋੜਾ ਅਤੇ ਬੇਹਿਸਾਬ ਧਨ ਖ਼ਰਚਣਾ; ਅਜਿਹਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਨੂੰ prodigal (ਫਜ਼ੂਲ ਖ਼ਰਚ) ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ। 'ਦੇਸ਼ ਧ੍ਰੋਹ' Treason, 'ਕਸ਼ਟ ਦੇਣਾ' Torment ਅਤੇ 'ਅਨੋਖੀ ਵਸਤੂ' Curiosity/Novelty ਦੇ ਅਨੁਵਾਦ ਹਨ।
ਦਿੱਤੇ ਵਿਕਲਪਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ 'Fable' ਲਈ ਸਹੀ ਰੂਪ ਮਿਥਿਹਾਸਕ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਹੈ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ Fable ਇੱਕ ਕਲਪਿਤ ਕਥਾ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਨਾ ਕਿ ਇਤਿਹਾਸਕ (historical), ਯਥਾਰਥਕ (realistic) ਜਾਂ ਨਿਰੀ ਬਿਰਤਾਂਤਕ (narrative) ਕਹਾਣੀ। ਮਿਆਰੀ ਅਨੁਵਾਦ ਵਿੱਚ Fable ਦਾ ਅਰਥ ਨੀਤੀ-ਕਥਾ (ਜੰਤੂ-ਕਥਾ) ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਸ਼ੂ-ਪੰਛੀ ਪਾਤਰ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਅੰਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ, ਜਿਵੇਂ ਪੰਚਤੰਤਰ ਦੀਆਂ ਕਹਾਣੀਆਂ। ਇਹ ਫ਼ਰਕ ਯਾਦ ਰੱਖੋ: Myth = ਮਿੱਥ ਜਾਂ ਮਿਥਿਹਾਸਕ ਕਥਾ, Fable = ਨੀਤੀ-ਕਥਾ, Legend = ਦੰਦ-ਕਥਾ।
'Bias' ਦਾ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਰੂਪ ਪੱਖਪਾਤ ਹੈ, ਭਾਵ ਕਿਸੇ ਇੱਕ ਪਾਸੇ ਵੱਲ ਬੇਇਨਸਾਫ਼ੀ ਨਾਲ ਝੁਕਾਅ ਰੱਖਣਾ। 'ਨਿਰਪੱਖ' (Impartial) ਇਸ ਦਾ ਉਲਟ ਹੈ, 'ਵਿਰੋਧੀ' Opponent ਅਤੇ 'ਸਮਕਾਲ' Contemporary ਦਾ ਅਨੁਵਾਦ ਹੈ।
'Discretionary' ਦਾ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਪ੍ਰਸ਼ਾਸਨਿਕ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਅਖ਼ਤਿਆਰੀ ਹੈ (discretionary powers = ਅਖ਼ਤਿਆਰੀ ਸ਼ਕਤੀਆਂ, discretionary grant = ਅਖ਼ਤਿਆਰੀ ਗਰਾਂਟ), ਜੋ 'ਅਖ਼ਤਿਆਰ' (ਮਰਜ਼ੀ, ਅਧਿਕਾਰ) ਤੋਂ ਬਣਿਆ ਹੈ। 'ਅਗਿਆਵਾਚਕ' imperative ਅਤੇ 'ਅਪੂਰਨ' incomplete ਲਈ ਵਰਤੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ; 'ਡੂੰਘਾ ਲਹਿ ਜਾਣਾ' ਕਿਸੇ ਇੱਕ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦਾ ਅਨੁਵਾਦ ਨਹੀਂ।
‘Prohibited’ ਦਾ ਅਰਥ ‘ਮਨ੍ਹਾਂ’ ਜਾਂ ‘ਵਰਜਿਤ’ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਲਈ ਸਹੀ ਅਨੁਵਾਦ ਹੈ ‘ਰੇਲ ਦੀ ਪਟੜੀ ਤੋਂ ਲੰਘਣਾ ਮਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਹੈ।’ (a) ਵਿੱਚ ‘ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ’ ਸਲਾਹ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ। (c) ਵਿੱਚ ‘ਗਲਤੀ ਨਾ ਕਰੋ’ ਵਾਧੂ ਭਾਵ ਜੋੜਦਾ ਹੈ। (d) ਵਿੱਚ ‘ਗ਼ੈਰ-ਕਾਨੂੰਨੀ’ ਦਾ ਅਰਥ ‘illegal’ ਹੈ, ‘prohibited’ ਨਹੀਂ।
'Guests are coming to our house tomorrow' ਵਰਤਮਾਨ ਚਾਲੂ ਕਾਲ (present continuous) ਰਾਹੀਂ ਭਵਿੱਖ ਦੀ ਯੋਜਨਾ ਦੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਲਈ ਸ਼ੁੱਧ ਅਨੁਵਾਦ ਕੱਲ ਸਾਡੇ ਘਰ ਮਹਿਮਾਨ ਆ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ਹੈ। 'ਆ ਰਹੇ ਸੀ/ਸਨ' ਅਤੇ 'ਆਉਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਸਨ' ਭੂਤਕਾਲ ਦੇ ਰੂਪ ਹਨ, ਜੋ 'tomorrow' ਨਾਲ ਮੇਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਖਾਂਦੇ।
‘At your earliest convenience’ ਇੱਕ ਦਫ਼ਤਰੀ ਵਾਕੰਸ਼ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਅਰਥ ਹੈ ‘ਜਿੰਨੀ ਛੇਤੀ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਲਈ ਸੰਭਵ ਜਾਂ ਸੁਵਿਧਾਜਨਕ ਹੋਵੇ’। ‘ਗੱਲ ਮੂੰਹੋਂ ਕਢਵਾ ਲੈਣਾ’ ਮੁਹਾਵਰਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਬਾਕੀ ਦੋ ਵਿਕਲਪ ਮੂਲ ਵਾਕੰਸ਼ ਦਾ ਭਾਵ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੰਦੇ।
ਪ੍ਰਸ਼ਾਸਨਿਕ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਵਲੀ ਵਿੱਚ ‘endorsement’ ਦਾ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਰੂਪ ‘ਪਿੱਠ-ਅੰਕਣ’ ਹੈ, ਭਾਵ ਕਿਸੇ ਚਿੱਠੀ ਜਾਂ ਦਸਤਾਵੇਜ਼ ਦੀ ਪਿੱਠ ਜਾਂ ਹੇਠਾਂ ਲਿਖੀ ਪ੍ਰਵਾਨਗੀ ਜਾਂ ਟਿੱਪਣੀ (ਜਿਵੇਂ ‘ਉਤਾਰਾ ਪਿੱਠ-ਅੰਕਣ ਸਹਿਤ ਭੇਜਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ’)। ‘ਮੁਲਾਂਕਣ’ evaluation ਲਈ ਵਰਤਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ‘ਪਿੱਠ-ਆਂਕਣ’ ਗ਼ਲਤ ਸ਼ਬਦ-ਜੋੜ ਹੈ।
'Culture' ਦਾ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਰੂਪ ਸਭਿਆਚਾਰ (ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰ) ਹੈ। 'ਸਭਿਅਤਾ' civilization, 'ਸਭਿਆਚਾਰਕਰਨ' acculturation/enculturation ਅਤੇ 'ਸਭਿਅਤਾਵਾਦ' civilizationism ਲਈ ਵਰਤੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
