Punjabi to English Translation

Choose the correct, natural English translation of a Punjabi sentence — using tense, prepositions and real Punjab Police questions.

Punjab PolicePSSSB11 MIN READ

In these questions a Punjabi sentence is given and you choose its correct English translation from four options. Because the four options are very close, the exam is really testing English grammar — the right tense, the correct preposition, singular vs plural, and natural English rather than a word-for-word rendering. The best way to decide is to translate the Punjabi in your head first, then find the option that is both grammatically correct and says the same thing. Every quiz below is a real Punjab Police SI or Constable question.

What the question really tests

Tense, preposition, number, and natural English — in that order.

KEY TERM
How to pick the right translation

Run four quick checks. 1. Tense — does the English tense match the Punjabi (ਮਿਲ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ = present perfect 'have received')? 2. Preposition — is the fixed English preposition right (believe in, compelled by)? 3. Number & form — singular/plural and correct verb form ('have received', not 'have receive'). 4. Natural English — reject stiff, word-for-word options even if each word is 'correct'. The winning option passes all four.

COMMON TRAPS
  • Match the tense: 'ਮਿਲ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ' is present perfect (have received), not simple past.
  • Fixed prepositions: believe/trust in, compelled by, in my favour — not 'trust on' or 'compelled from'.
  • A single wrong verb form ('have receive', 'want to helps') makes the whole option wrong.
  • Idioms are not literal: 'ਨਜ਼ਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾ' = 'Get out of my sight', not 'out of my eye'.
  • Watch one swapped word: opinion vs vote, pronounce vs announce, issues vs money.
  • Reject options that add or drop a word (a missing 'always', an extra 'to give my vote').
CHECK YOURSELF

Choose the best English translation of: 'ਉਸਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸੱਚ ਦੱਸਿਆ।' (a) He tell me the truth (b) He told me the truth (c) He is telling me truth (d) He has told me a truth

Show answer

(b) He told me the truth. 'ਦੱਸਿਆ' is a completed past action, so simple past 'told' is right, and 'the truth' takes 'the'. (a) uses the base verb 'tell'; (c) changes the tense; (d) wrongly uses 'a truth'.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the translation question ask?

It gives a Punjabi sentence and four English translations; you pick the one that is grammatically correct and means the same.

What should I check first?

The tense. Match the English tense to the Punjabi — completed-with-now is present perfect (have received), a finished past is simple past (told).

Why do prepositions matter so much here?

English fixes certain prepositions: believe in, trust in, compelled by, in my favour. A wrong preposition makes an otherwise good option wrong.

Should I translate word-for-word?

No. Translate the meaning. Word-for-word gives unnatural English like 'out of my eye' instead of the real idiom 'out of my sight'.

How do I spot the trap option?

Look for one small defect: a wrong verb form, a swapped word (opinion vs vote), a missing or extra word, or a changed meaning.

How do I translate 'ਮਿਲ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ'?

As present perfect: 'have/has received'. It is a completed action that still matters now, not a plain past.

Is 'trust on' ever correct?

No. The correct forms are 'trust in' and 'believe in'. 'Trust on God' is a common wrong option.

What is the best overall strategy?

Translate the Punjabi in your head first, then find the option that matches it and is grammatically clean — check tense, preposition, number, and natural English.

How many translation questions appear in Punjab Police?

Usually one or two per paper in the Punjab Police SI and Constable English section — easy marks with a little grammar revision.
