Physical test guide
Punjab Police ASI physical test: PMT and PST
After the written test, shortlisted candidates take two physical tests. PMT measures your height. PST is a run and two jumps. Both are pass or fail — they do not add marks — but failing any one event ends your selection.
Based on the last SI advertisement, not on an ASI notice. The Punjab Police ASI notification is not out yet. Every number below is from the Punjab Police recruitment of Sub-Inspectors (District Police and Armed Police cadres), Advt. No. 01 of 2023, published 31 January 2023. When the ASI notification comes, we update this page the same day.
The three stages
Where the physical test comes
- Stage I · Written testPapers I, II and III on computer. Merit comes from Papers I and II; Paper III (Punjabi) is qualifying.
- Stage II · PMT and PSTHeight, then the run and the jumps. Qualifying only.
- Stage III · DocumentsOriginal certificates are checked.
PMT · Physical Measurement Test
Minimum height
Same for the District Police and the Armed Police cadre. Your height is measured at the venue; at or above the minimum means you have qualified the PMT. The SI 2023 advertisement gives no chest measurement.
PST · Physical Screening Test
The run and the jumps
You must clear every event of your category. One failed event and you are out.

- Long jump 3.65 m3 chances
- High jump 1.10 m3 chances

- Long jump 2.75 m3 chances

Rules to know
- Random dope tests may be done. Refusing to give a sample disqualifies you.
- A woman who is pregnant on the test date can ask on the recruitment portal to postpone PMT and PST, with a report from a government hospital, on or before her test date.
- Bring the Stage II admit card (printed) and one photo ID: Aadhaar, driving licence, PAN, voter ID or passport.
- Disagree with your result? Appeal the same day at the venue to the Chairperson or Member of the Central Recruitment Board present. Their decision is final.
Stage III
Documents to keep ready
Originals, plus one self-attested copy of each. Without the originals on the day, you are not considered.
- Matriculation certificate (proof of age)
- Graduation degree, or its equivalent
- Proof that you passed Punjabi at matriculation level, or its equivalent
- Reserved category certificate from the competent authority, if you applied in one (Ward of Police Personnel: certificate from the office of DGP, Punjab)
- No Objection Certificate from your department, if you are a serving government employee
- Supporting documents, if you are an ex-serviceman
Getting ready
How to prepare, simply
- Start now, not after the result. The physical test comes soon after the written result, and running fitness takes weeks to build.
- Time yourself on a measured track. Run the full distance once a week with a stopwatch, so you know how far you are from the target time.
- Practise the jumps with the bar and the mark at the real height and distance. Technique matters as much as strength, and you get only three chances.
- Build up slowly and rest. An injury in the last weeks is the most common way to lose the chance. If you have a health problem, see a doctor before hard training.
- Measure your height properly early, at a clinic or a government health centre, so there are no surprises at PMT.
Questions
About the physical test
Are these the official Punjab Police ASI physical standards?
Not yet. The ASI notification has not been released. These are the standards in the last Punjab Police Sub-Inspector advertisement (Advt. No. 01 of 2023), the closest post to ASI. Check the ASI notification when it comes — this page will be updated the same day.
Do PMT and PST marks count in the merit list?
No. In the SI 2023 recruitment both were qualifying only — you pass or fail. Merit was decided by the marks in Papers I and II of the written test.
What happens if I fail one event?
You are out. The advertisement says a candidate must qualify all the events of their category, and failing any one event disqualifies the candidate.
How many chances do I get?
One chance for the run. Three chances each for the long jump and the high jump.
What is the minimum height?
5 feet 7 inches for men and 5 feet 2 inches for women, for both the District Police and the Armed Police cadre.
Who can I complain to if I think my result is wrong?
On the same day, at the venue, to the Chairperson or the Member of the Central Recruitment Board present there. Their decision is final; no appeal is taken later.
