Apple Pay Launches in India with Axis Bank as Its First Banking Partner
Apple Pay went live in India on 30 September 2026 with Axis Bank as its first and only launch banking partner, and support limited to Visa and Mastercard credit cards; UPI and RuPay are not supported at launch. Payments work over NFC on iPhone XR and later, iPad and Apple Watch Series 6 and later. Cards are tokenised: an encrypted Device Account Number is held in the device's Secure Element, and the actual card number is stored neither on the device nor on Apple's servers. Apple Pay now operates in more than 90 countries with over 11,000 bank and network partners.
UPI is operated by the National Payments Corporation of India, which was set up in 2008 | RuPay is NPCI's domestic card network, launched in 2012 | Tokenisation of card data was mandated by the RBI to replace the storage of actual card numbers by merchants
