MoRTH Proposes Phased Rollout of Bharat Stage VII Emission Norms from April 2029
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has proposed Bharat Stage VII (BS-VII) emission standards for new cars and SUVs, aligned with the European Euro 7 regime, in three phases beginning 1 April 2029, followed by April 2031 and April 2035. Phase 2 introduces India's first limits on brake-wear and tyre (non-exhaust) emissions, while Phase 3 tightens brake-particle and particle-mass caps. Critically, the particulate matter measurement threshold drops from 23 nanometres to 10 nanometres, capturing far finer soot. Two-wheeler timelines will be notified separately. India had leapfrogged from BS-IV straight to BS-VI on 1 April 2020, skipping BS-V.
Bharat Stage emission standards are notified by the Central Government on the advice of the Central Pollution Control Board and are modelled on European Euro norms | India adopted BS-VI nationwide on 1 April 2020, skipping BS-V | The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways administers the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 and is headed by Nitin Gadkari
