India Launches Biovigilance Programme of India (BvPI) for Transplant Patient Safety
India launched the Biovigilance Programme of India (BvPI) in New Delhi on 21 September 2026, announced during the 6th National Pharmacovigilance Week. Biovigilance is a safety-monitoring system for adverse reactions linked to biological products; in India the programme covers medicines and biological materials used in organ and tissue transplantation. The Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC) will lead monitoring of transplant-related adverse events. BvPI completes a three-pillar safety architecture alongside the existing Pharmacovigilance Programme of India (drugs) and Materiovigilance Programme (medical devices). On the same day, the 7th edition of the National Formulary of India and its digital version were released at the Dr. Ambedkar International Centre, New Delhi.
Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission is based in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare | India's transplant law: Transplantation of Human Organs Act, 1994 | NOTTO is the national organ transplant registry body
