Indian Coast Guard Commissions Indigenous Fast Patrol Vessel ICGS Ajit at Goa Shipyard
The Indian Coast Guard commissioned ICGS Ajit, an indigenously built Fast Patrol Vessel, at Goa Shipyard Limited on 9 October 2026, with Dr Sirish Choudhary, Principal Integrated Financial Advisor to the Coast Guard, presiding. The ship will be based at Okha in Gujarat and deployed along India's western seaboard for coastal surveillance, search and rescue, anti-smuggling and anti-poaching patrols and marine pollution response. The commissioning continues a dense run of indigenous maritime inductions — it comes days after the Navy launched its first home-built Fleet Support Ship Surya at Visakhapatnam, and soon after the Coast Guard's SAREX-2026 exercise off Paradip rehearsed exactly Ajit's rescue role.
The Indian Coast Guard was formally established on 18 August 1978 under the Coast Guard Act, 1978 and functions under the Ministry of Defence | Its motto is 'Vayam Rakshamah', meaning 'We Protect' | Goa Shipyard Limited, a Mini Ratna defence PSU at Vasco da Gama, is a principal builder of Coast Guard vessels
