India Demonstrates Its First Free-Space Quantum Key Distribution Link Over 5.56 Kilometres
QNu Labs, BISAG-N and IIT Gandhinagar demonstrated India's first free-space quantum key distribution (QKD) link on 5 October 2026, sending cryptographic keys 5.56 km through open air to IIT Gandhinagar's Interdisciplinary School of Technology and Future. The link ran a BB84-based protocol on QNu Labs' Armos QKD hardware with BISAG-N's Vedic Kavach post-quantum software, holding the quantum bit error rate below 5% and generating 230–260 secure bits per second over pointing, acquisition and tracking optical terminals. Because measurement disturbs photon states, eavesdropping is detectable — a step towards satellite-to-ground quantum links.
The National Quantum Mission was approved in 2023 with an outlay of Rs 6,003.65 crore up to 2030-31 and is implemented by the Department of Science and Technology | The BB84 protocol, the first QKD scheme, was proposed by Charles Bennett and Gilles Brassard in 1984 | BISAG-N, the Bhaskaracharya National Institute for Space Applications and Geo-informatics, is at Gandhinagar under MeitY
