India and Liberia Launch Group of Friends on Safety of Shipping and Seafarers
India and Liberia launched the Group of Friends on Safety & Security of Shipping & Seafarers in New York on 25 September 2026, on the margins of the UN General Assembly's high-level week. The grouping is meant to build coalition support for protecting merchant shipping and crews against attacks, piracy and detention in contested waters, and for faster repatriation of seafarers. Liberia is a natural co-sponsor because it operates one of the world's largest open ship registries, while India supplies a large share of the global seafarer workforce. The launch runs alongside India's wider maritime push, including the new Mega Port designations.
