India assigns official names to 27 places in Arunachal Pradesh

9 August 2026National

The Ministry of Home Affairs, in consultation with the Government of Arunachal Pradesh, assigned standardised official names to 27 places and geographical features — settlements, war memorials, lakes and high-altitude passes — on the official maps of the Survey of India (finalised 7 August 2026). The move counters China''s repeated renaming exercises and reinforces India''s sovereign and legal claim; named sites include strategically significant points such as Long Ju, Thag La, Dzo La and Riza La. China (which calls Arunachal ''Zangnan / South Tibet'') had earlier issued its own lists: 6 names in 2017, 15 in 2021, 11 in 2023 and 30 in March 2024. India rejects these as ''vain and preposterous''.
