International Chess Day, also known as World Chess Day, is observed annually on 20 July worldwide to celebrate the game of chess and the people it brings together. Why 20 July: The date marks the founding of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) in Paris on 20 July 1924. It is an official United Nations observance, recognised by the UN General Assembly in 2019. Observance 2026: FIDE invited the global chess community to mark International Chess Day 2026 through creative games, inclusive events and a live discussion on chess as a tool for social change. The 2026 programme emphasised inclusivity, strategy and global harmony, and included the Creative Chess challenge, activities by the FIDE Commission for Women's Chess, and a Social Commission panel featuring speakers involved in prison chess, refugee projects and community programmes worldwide.
