President Murmu Promulgates Regulation Enabling High Court Bench Sittings in Ladakh

President Droupadi Murmu promulgated the Union Territory of Ladakh (Sitting of Bench of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh in Ladakh) Regulation, 2026 on 27 August 2026, notified in the Gazette of India Extraordinary. Issued under Article 240 of the Constitution and Section 58(2) of the J&K Reorganisation Act, 2019, it lets Judges and Division Courts of the common High Court sit in Ladakh at a venue chosen by the Chief Justice with the Lieutenant Governor's approval, leaving the principal seat unchanged. This completes the step the Union Cabinet approved on 20 August 2026; enforcement awaits notification by Ladakh's Administrator.

Supreme Court Hosts BRICS Chief Justices' Forum 2026 in New Delhi

The Supreme Court of India is hosting the BRICS Chief Justices' Forum 2026 in New Delhi from 4 to 6 September 2026, with Chief Justice of India Surya Kant leading the proceedings. 31-Member Joint Parliamentary Committee under Sanjay Jaiswal Constituted to Examine FCRA Amendment Bill, 2026

Supreme Court Directs Seven States to Raise District Judges' Retirement Age from 60 to 62

The Supreme Court of India on 4 September 2026 directed seven consenting states to amend their judicial service rules and raise the retirement age of district judges from 60 to 62 years. The move addresses chronic vacancies and mounting pendency in the subordinate judiciary by retaining experienced judicial officers for two more years. Under the Constitution, High Court judges retire at 62 and Supreme Court judges at 65, while district judiciary service conditions are governed by state rules framed under Articles 233–235, which vest control of subordinate courts in the High Courts.

Bihar and Jharkhand Sign MoU Ending the 25-Year-Old Sone River Water-Sharing Dispute

Bihar and Jharkhand signed a Memorandum of Understanding in New Delhi on 31 August 2026 to share the waters of the Sone River, settling a dispute pending since Jharkhand was carved out of Bihar in November 2000. Of the 7.75 million acre-feet (MAF) allotted to undivided Bihar under the 1973 Bansagar Agreement, Bihar will receive 5.75 MAF and Jharkhand 2 MAF. The pact was signed in the presence of Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah, Jal Shakti Minister C. R. Patil, and Chief Ministers Samrat Choudhary of Bihar and Hemant Soren of Jharkhand. It is the fourth inter-state water agreement of 2026.
