Two New Amphibian Species Discovered in Mizoram

18 September 2026· MizoramNational

Researchers in Mizoram described two new amphibian species in September 2026. Ingerana aizawl, a small stream-dwelling frog, was found along the Hratdawng Stream on the Mizoram University campus in Aizawl and named after the state capital. The population had been misidentified as *Ingerana borealis* for nearly two decades until genetic and morphological study separated it; the frog has wrinkled dorsal skin, calls at night in rhythmic series of 12 notes and breeds between May and July. The montane toad Duttaphrynus phawngpui was discovered in Phawngpui National Park, Lawngtlai district, and named after Mizoram's highest peak. Findings were published in Zootaxa.
