National Broadcasting Day is observed every year on 23 July, marking the first-ever organised radio broadcast by the Indian Broadcasting Company (IBC) from Bombay on 23 July 1927. After the IBC closed in 1930, the government launched the Indian State Broadcasting Service (ISBS), renamed All India Radio (AIR) in 1936; the name Akashvani was adopted in 1957. The day recognises radio's role in informing and educating people, especially in rural areas. 2026 marks the 99th anniversary of organised radio in India.
