IISc's Mahesh Kakde Wins Ramanujan Prize 2026
Mahesh Kakde, a professor at the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, won the Ramanujan Prize for Young Mathematicians 2026 'for his important contributions to algebraic number theory'. His cited work includes foundational results in non-commutative Iwasawa theory and on the Gross-Stark and Brumer-Stark conjectures, which bear on Hilbert's twelfth problem. The prize carries a $10,000 cash award, has been given annually since 2005, and is administered jointly by the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Trieste, and the International Mathematical Union (IMU). The announcement came in the same week as the 2026 Nobel Prize science declarations.
The ICTP Ramanujan Prize, instituted in 2005, is for mathematicians under 45 from developing countries and is named after Srinivasa Ramanujan | Srinivasa Ramanujan was born on 22 December 1887; his birthday is observed in India as National Mathematics Day | ICTP, founded in 1964 by Abdus Salam, is at Trieste, Italy; the International Mathematical Union awards the Fields Medal every four years
