Starlink Sets Up 20 Satellite Gateway Sites in India
SpaceX has built 20 satellite gateway sites with hundreds of antennas across India, Lauren Dreyer, SpaceX's Vice-President for Starlink Business Operations, said at the India Mobile Congress 2026 on 7 October. Starlink holds a Global Mobile Personal Communications by Satellite (GMPCS) licence — one of three satellite-communications licences India has granted — and has signed distribution MoUs with Airtel and Jio, but still awaits spectrum allocation and final security clearance before commercial service can begin. Dreyer said India-specific security controls keep Indian user data within the country, after five years of engagement with Indian regulators, industry and operators.
A GMPCS licence is issued by the Department of Telecommunications; satellite operators also need authorisation from IN-SPACe, set up in 2020 under the Department of Space | Eutelsat OneWeb and the Jio-SES joint venture Jio Satellite Communications are the other GMPCS licensees in India | India Mobile Congress is organised by the Department of Telecommunications with the Cellular Operators Association of India
