World Ozone Day 2026 Observed on 16 September with the Theme 'Global Action for a Cooler Planet'
The International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, or World Ozone Day, was observed on 16 September 2026 — the 32nd observance — on the theme "Global action for a cooler planet." The 2026 edition marks 10 years of sustainable cooling under the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol. The date commemorates the signing of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer in 1987. The UN General Assembly proclaimed the day through resolution A/RES/49/114 of 19 December 1994, and it was first observed on 16 September 1995. The ozone layer absorbs most of the Sun's harmful ultraviolet radiation.
The Montreal Protocol of 1987 is the only UN treaty ratified by all 198 UN member states and phases out ozone-depleting substances such as CFCs | The Kigali Amendment, adopted in 2016 and in force from 1 January 2019, phases down hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), which are potent greenhouse gases | The Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer was adopted in 1985
