World Rhino Day 2026 Observed on the Theme 'Keep the Five Alive'
World Rhino Day was observed on 22 September 2026 on the theme "Keep the Five Alive", which draws attention to all five surviving rhino species. Marking the day, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the state now holds 3,260 greater one-horned rhinos — close to 80% of the global population estimated at 4,075 — and recorded zero known poaching cases in 2025, only the second such year since the 1970s after 2022. Assam's rhinos are concentrated in Kaziranga, Orang, Pobitora and Manas, and the greater one-horned rhino is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List.
World Rhino Day is observed on 22 September, first marked by WWF-South Africa in 2010 | The five surviving rhino species are greater one-horned, white, black, Sumatran and Javan | Kaziranga National Park in Assam is a UNESCO World Heritage Site
