World Standards Day 2026 Observed on 14 October
World Standards Day, also called International Standards Day, falls on 14 October, honouring the experts behind the voluntary international standards that underpin trade, safety and interoperability. The date marks the 1946 London meeting where delegates from 25 countries agreed to create an international standards organisation, leading to ISO's founding; the day has been observed since 1970, jointly by ISO, the IEC and the ITU. Its relevance shows in this week's 6G work - the Bharat 6G Alliance symposium advanced the New Delhi Declaration's 6G principles, and 6G is ultimately standardised through the ITU and 3GPP. India's standards body is the Bureau of Indian Standards.
ISO - the International Organization for Standardization - was founded in 1947 and is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland | The IEC was founded in 1906 and the ITU in 1865, making the ITU the oldest UN specialised agency; both are based in Geneva | The Bureau of Indian Standards was established under the BIS Act, 1986 and functions under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution
