Maghi Mela is the great annual fair of Sri Muktsar Sahib, held on Maghi — the first day of the Punjabi month of Magh, which falls on 14 January, the day after Lohri. It commemorates the Chali Mukte, the forty Sikhs who fell on 29 December 1705 at the Battle of Khidrana fighting the imperial force of Wazir Khan for Guru Gobind Singh Ji. These forty had earlier deserted the Guru during the siege of Anandpur Sahib and signed a bedava, a written disclaimer of allegiance. Mai Bhago shamed them into returning, and after the battle the Guru tore up the bedava over the dying Bhai Maha Singh and blessed the forty as muktas, the liberated ones — from which Khidrana took its new name, Muktsar. The fair opens with a ceremonial dip in the sarovar and a nagar kirtan from Gurdwara Tuti Gandi Sahib, and it doubles as one of Punjab's biggest political conference grounds. Options 2, 3 and 4 name no recognised mela; they are invented distractors built from familiar Sikh words. Answer: option 1.
