Shah Hussain (1538-1599) of Lahore, the Sufi known as Madho Lal Hussain after his companion Madho Lal, is credited with founding the kafi as a Punjabi poetic form — a short sung lyric built on a repeated refrain, written in simple Punjabi and set to a raga. His kafis, full of the imagery of the spinning wheel and the weaver's craft, were taken up and perfected by Bulleh Shah (option 3), the greatest later kafi poet, which is why he is the tempting choice — but he came almost two centuries after. Waris Shah wrote the qissa 'Heer' (1766) and Baba Sheikh Farid, the twelfth-century saint whose verses are in the Guru Granth Sahib, composed shlokas rather than kafis. Hence option 1.
