Gwalior-Chambal Region Gets New Rail Link as Kailaras-Birpur Section Opens

The gauge-converted 56-km Kailaras–Sabalgarh–Birpur rail section in Madhya Pradesh was virtually inaugurated on 18 August 2026, and the Gwalior–Kailaras MEMU service was extended up to Birpur the same day — creating direct rail connectivity between Gwalior, Sabalgarh, Vijaypur and Birpur. The section forms part of the broader Gwalior–Sheopur rail corridor passing through Morena and Sheopur districts. Indian Railways uses broad gauge (1,676 mm) as its standard for most trunk routes; this project converts a narrower line to that standard. The remaining legs — a 37-km Birpur–Seroni Road section and a 33-km Seroni Road–Sheopur Kalan section — are nearing completion, with a future extension planned from Sheopur Kalan to Kota, Rajasthan. The Railway Ministry says the new section will benefit residents of 100+ villages in Morena and Sheopur. Madhya Pradesh's railway budget allocation has risen sharply to ₹15,188 crore for 2026-27, compared to an average of just ₹632 crore a year during 2009-14. The corridor has been built in stages, including an 11-km Birlanagar–Rayaru segment opened in May 2023 and the 27-km Sabalgarh–Birpur segment opened in 2026.

Punjab Launches 'Pehchaan' Portal for Unidentified and Unclaimed Deceased Persons

Punjab Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr Balbir Singh launched 'Pehchaan', a statewide digital portal to trace unidentified and unclaimed deceased persons lying in government mortuaries, making Punjab the first state in India with such a system. Built on Punjab's MedLEaPR medico-legal reporting platform by the National Informatics Centre on directions of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the free, publicly searchable portal records photographs, physical traits and identification marks within 48 hours and automatically alerts investigating officers for verification. MedLEaPR links police, courts, health institutions and nine forensic science laboratories, and integrates with CCTNS to match missing-person and unidentified-deceased records — complementing the national mortuary standards notified earlier this month.

OSDMA Signs MoUs with UNDP and CivicDataLab to Strengthen Odisha's Disaster Risk Management

The Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA) signed two MoUs — with the UNDP and CivicDataLab — at Bhubaneswar in September 2026 to strengthen the state's disaster risk management ecosystem. Under the UNDP pact, a Hazard, Risk and Vulnerability Assessment (HRVA) will be conducted across all 30 districts of Odisha to build a digital evidence base for mitigation, preparedness and climate-resilient planning. CivicDataLab will implement the Intelligent Data Solutions for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDS-DRR) platform, integrating government data with real-time analytics for OSDMA and District Disaster Management Authorities. The GIS-enabled platforms will focus initially on floods, coastal flooding and heatwaves, supporting Odisha's "Zero Casualty" goal.

Andhra Pradesh Approves India's First Dedicated Quantum and AI University Campus at Amaravati

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu approved India's first dedicated Quantum and AI University campus, to be built in Amaravati by the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT), an autonomous society under MeitY. The campus spans 8.5 acres with an investment of Rs 730.70 crore over five years, fully funded by a Government of India grant-in-aid. It will offer UG, PG, PhD, diploma and executive programmes in Quantum Computing, Artificial Intelligence, VLSI and semiconductor fabrication. It complements the Amaravati Quantum Valley facility, built with German technology, due for completion by December 2026 and operations from January 2027.
