Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar announced the 'Vidyarthi Sahayahasta' education scheme during Independence Day celebrations at Manekshaw Parade Grounds, Bengaluru, aimed at improving access to professional education for rural students. Under the scheme, the state will provide a 7.5% reservation within the existing 15% rural reservation quota for eligible rural students seeking admission to professional programmes, including medical and engineering courses.
The scheme effectively creates a sub-quota inside Karnataka's existing rural reservation framework, intended to ensure rural candidates are not crowded out within their own reserved category as competition for professional seats intensifies. It was announced alongside the state's broader Independence Day messaging on educational equity.
The move places Karnataka among several states that have recently adjusted reservation sub-categories for professional education access — a recurring theme in state policy this year, alongside Tamil Nadu's parallel push on service benefits for government employees (maternity leave) and other states' education-access schemes.

Maharashtra declared snakebite a notifiable disease on 18 August 2026, making it mandatory for government hospitals, private hospitals, medical colleges and healthcare practitioners to report every suspected, probable or confirmed snakebite case and death. Institutions must now record the date and place of the bite, patient details, envenomation symptoms, and the exact quantity of Anti-Snake Venom (ASV) administered.
Cases will be reported through the Health Management Information System and the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP), with the Director of Hospitals providing state-level oversight and district surgeons/health officers acting as nodal officers — creating a state-to-district reporting chain.
The decision followed a tragic incident on 9 August 2026 at a state-aided residential school in Japtalai village, Gadchiroli district, where three tribal schoolgirls died and three others were hospitalised after a snakebite; the school's licence was cancelled on 19 August 2026. Maharashtra recorded about 1.29 lakh snakebite cases and 655 deaths between April 2023 and March 2026, and the new notification is meant to build a statewide case-tracking database.

Tamil Nadu announced 365 days of fully-paid maternity leave for women state government employees for a third child, restoring parity with the leave available for the first two deliveries. The announcement was made in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly in Chennai during the demand-for-grants discussion for the Human Resources Management Department.
The move reverses a March 2026 amendment to Fundamental Rule 101(A), which had cut third-child maternity leave to just 12 weeks (84 days) following a Supreme Court directive; the Madras High Court had upheld that restriction in June 2026. The reversal increases the leave more than fourfold, back to a full year with pay.
The government cited Tamil Nadu's demographic profile in its reasoning: the state's Total Fertility Rate is below 1.4, well under the replacement level of 2.1, and nearly 16% of its population is above 60 years of age. The DMK-led government's own party raised objections to the earlier restriction in the Assembly; a formal government order for implementation is awaited.
