Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar announced the 'Vidyarthi Sahayahasta' education scheme during Independence Day celebrations at Manekshaw Parade Grounds, Bengaluru, aimed at improving access to professional education for rural students. Under the scheme, the state will provide a 7.5% reservation within the existing 15% rural reservation quota for eligible rural students seeking admission to professional programmes, including medical and engineering courses. The scheme effectively creates a sub-quota inside Karnataka's existing rural reservation framework, intended to ensure rural candidates are not crowded out within their own reserved category as competition for professional seats intensifies. It was announced alongside the state's broader Independence Day messaging on educational equity. The move places Karnataka among several states that have recently adjusted reservation sub-categories for professional education access — a recurring theme in state policy this year, alongside Tamil Nadu's parallel push on service benefits for government employees (maternity leave) and other states' education-access schemes.

Telangana's nine-day floral festival Bathukamma concluded with Saddula Bathukamma, its final day, on 18 October 2026. Maharashtra Extends Drought Declaration to 305 Talukas, Covering Over 85% of the State

Centre Approves Rs 65 Crore DRISHTI Project for Property Rights in Delhi's Unauthorised Colonies

Ambaji Temple's Mohanthal Prasad Receives a Geographical Indication Tag

The Mohanthal prasad offered at the Ambaji temple in Banaskantha district, Gujarat was granted a Geographical Indication (GI) tag on 8 October 2026, on an application filed on 1 October 2026 by the Shree Arasuri Ambaji Mata Devsthan Trust. The certificate was handed over at Chachar Chowk in Ambaji on 11 October 2026, the first day of Sharadiya Navratri, by Dr Unnat P. Registration under the GI of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999 lasts 10 years and is renewable, following Jharkhand's Mandar drum tag in late September.
