India's First LNG-Powered Train Flagged Off from Sabarmati Station in Ahmedabad
India's first LNG-powered train was flagged off from Sabarmati Railway Station in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, on 27 September 2026. The locomotive runs on a diesel–LNG dual-fuel system, in which liquefied natural gas substitutes a share of diesel, cutting fuel costs as well as carbon and particulate emissions on non-electrified sections. The step supports Indian Railways' target of net-zero carbon emissions by 2030 and its wider push into hydrogen, solar and biofuel traction. It follows Indian Railways' hydrogen-train trials and complements the near-complete electrification of broad-gauge routes, where LNG offers a transition fuel for the diesel operations that remain.
Indian Railways began in 1853 with the first passenger train running from Bori Bunder to Thane | Indian Railways is organised into 19 zones; Western Railway is headquartered at Churchgate, Mumbai | India's first hydrogen train trial run was conducted on the Jind-Sonipat section
