Weizmann Institute Scientists Identify DARE Cells That Begin Apoptosis but Survive to Repair Tissue

Scientists at Israel's Weizmann Institute of Science identified a population of DARE cells that begin programmed cell death, or apoptosis, yet survive and help rebuild damaged tissue; the work was published in Nature Communications on 18 September 2026. In fruit fly larvae these cells multiplied and replenished nearly half the damaged tissue within 48 hours, showing that caspases, the protease enzymes that normally drive apoptosis, can also support survival. A related study found DARE cell descendants became seven times more resistant to cell death, a pathway linked to cancer recurrence and treatment resistance.

ISRO's EOS-06 Satellite Detects Early Ocean Signatures of an Intensifying El Nino in the Pacific

Data from ISRO's EOS-06 (Oceansat-3) has recorded a marked fall in surface chlorophyll-a across the equatorial Pacific Ocean during June 2026, an early marker of weakening marine productivity as El Nino strengthens. The decline coincided with a reversal of surface winds, from the usual east-to-west trade flow to west-to-east. The readings came from two payloads - the Ocean Colour Monitor-3 (OCM-3) and the Scatterometer (SCAT-3). They complement the World Meteorological Organization's July outlook that El Nino would intensify through August-October 2026, a pattern historically linked to a weaker southwest monsoon over India.

India's First LNG-Powered Train Flagged Off from Sabarmati Station in Ahmedabad

India's first LNG-powered train was flagged off from Sabarmati Railway Station in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, on 27 September 2026. The locomotive runs on a diesel–LNG dual-fuel system, in which liquefied natural gas substitutes a share of diesel, cutting fuel costs as well as carbon and particulate emissions on non-electrified sections. The step supports Indian Railways' target of net-zero carbon emissions by 2030 and its wider push into hydrogen, solar and biofuel traction. It follows Indian Railways' hydrogen-train trials and complements the near-complete electrification of broad-gauge routes, where LNG offers a transition fuel for the diesel operations that remain.
