Tata Steel Commissions India's First Coke Oven Gas Injection Project at Meramandali, Odisha
Tata Steel commissioned a Coke Oven Gas (COG) injection project at Blast Furnace 1 of its Meramandali plant in Odisha - a first-of-its-kind initiative in the Indian steel industry. COG is a hydrogen-rich by-product of coke making containing more than 55% hydrogen, traditionally used for power generation, heating or flaring. The project purifies and injects it into the blast furnace through tuyeres, creating a three-fuel operating system that cuts dependence on carbon-based reducing agents while improving process stability and efficiency. It was implemented with Paul Wurth (SMS group) technology and Kobelco (Kobe Steel) equipment, and supports Tata Steel's Net Zero by 2045 target.
