The International Day of the World''s Indigenous Peoples is observed every year on 9 August. The 2026 theme is ''Honouring Indigenous Midwives: Safeguarding Life and Well-being.'' The day recognises indigenous communities as knowledge holders and caregivers and promotes culturally appropriate approaches to well-being. The UN General Assembly proclaimed the day in 1994. As 9 August 2026 falls on a Sunday, the UN''s formal observance was held online on Monday, 10 August 2026.

International Day for People of African Descent Observed on 31 August 2026

The United Nations observed the International Day for People of African Descent on 31 August 2026, the sixth edition, under the 2026 theme "Expanding the Human Rights of People of African Descent." World Water Week 2026 Observed from 23-27 August with Theme 'Water for People and Progress'

World Water Week (WWW), the leading global conference on the water crisis, was observed from 23 to 27 August 2026 under the theme 'Water for People and Progress'. Held in the last week of August, it promotes sustainable, equitable and climate-resilient water management that includes vulnerable communities. The event has been organised since 1991 by the Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI), growing out of Stockholm's public festival celebrating clean waters and the first Stockholm Water Symposium.
