World Humanitarian Day 2026 Observed on 19 August

World Humanitarian Day is observed globally on 19 August every year to honour humanitarian workers who provide life-saving assistance in crises and to call for the protection of humanitarian personnel under International Humanitarian Law (IHL). The 2026 theme is "Honouring fallen humanitarians and calling for greater protection of health care." The date commemorates the 19 August 2003 bombing of the UN headquarters at the Canal Hotel in Baghdad, Iraq, which killed 22 humanitarian workers, including the UN Special Representative for Iraq, Sergio Vieira de Mello. The UN General Assembly designated 19 August as World Humanitarian Day through Resolution A/RES/63/139 on 11 December 2008, and the day was first observed in 2009. The observance this year lands in the same week that 210 Indian peacekeepers were honoured with the UN Medal in South Sudan for humanitarian and protection work under UNMISS — a reminder that peacekeeping and humanitarian assistance often overlap on the ground in active conflict and post-conflict zones, and that both carry real risk to the personnel involved.
