Quit India Movement — 84th anniversary (8 August)

8 August 2026 marked the 84th anniversary of the Quit India Movement (Bharat Chhodo Andolan), launched on 8 August 1942 at the Bombay session of the All India Congress Committee (Gowalia Tank Maidan). Mahatma Gandhi gave the famous ''Do or Die'' (Karo ya Maro) call, demanding an end to British rule. The slogan ''Quit India'' is credited to Yusuf Meherally. Most senior Congress leaders were arrested soon after; the mass agitation became a decisive phase of India''s freedom struggle. 9 August is remembered as ''August Kranti Din''.
