14th International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week Observed from 18 to 24 October 2026 on 'From Detection to Prevention'
The 14th International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week was observed from 18 to 24 October 2026 under the theme 'From Detection to Prevention', led by the World Health Organization with the UN Environment Programme. The week is the flagship campaign of the Global Alliance to Eliminate Lead Paint, which UNEP and WHO established in 2011, and was first observed in 2012. The 2026 edition pressed countries to move beyond blood-lead testing towards legally binding limits on lead in paint and safer recycling of used lead-acid batteries. Lead exposure irreversibly damages children's developing brains, and no level of exposure is known to be safe.
The Global Alliance to Eliminate Lead Paint was launched by UNEP and WHO in 2011; UNEP itself was created in 1972 following the Stockholm Conference and is headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya | WHO lists lead among the ten chemicals of major public health concern and holds that there is no known safe level of lead exposure | India's Regulation on Lead Contents in Household and Decorative Paints Rules, 2016 caps lead at 90 parts per million
