BNP senior leader Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir (78) was elected the 23rd President of Bangladesh on 20 August 2026, winning the country's first contested presidential election in 35 years. He secured 255 of 343 votes cast in the Jatiya Sangsad (Parliament), defeating Oli Ahmed of the Liberal Democratic Party, the nominee of the Jamaat-e-Islami-led 11-party opposition alliance, who polled 88 votes. The election was conducted under Chief Election Commissioner A.S.M. Nasir Uddin. Alamgir, a veteran BNP leader who earlier served as the party's Secretary General, resigned from that post and from the BNP's National Standing Committee before contesting the presidency.
