Cabinet Approves Rs 5,070 Crore PM Surya Sarovar Yojana for 5,000 MW Floating Solar

The Union Cabinet approved the Pradhan Mantri Surya Sarovar Yojana with an outlay of Rs 5,070 crore to establish about 5,000 MW of floating solar photovoltaic (FSPV) capacity on reservoirs and industrial water bodies, in several cases co-located with Energy Storage Systems (ESS). Floating solar reduces pressure on scarce land, can lower reservoir water evaporation, and advances India's renewable-energy and energy-security goals. The world's largest floating solar project on a reservoir is being developed at Omkareshwar, Madhya Pradesh (600 MW). Nodal ministry: MNRE. The scheme complements PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (rooftop solar).

New Damselfly Species Lestes paloti Discovered in Kerala Western Ghats

Indian odonatologists discovered a new spreadwing damselfly, Lestes paloti, from the Western Ghats in Kerala (family Lestidae, order Odonata), published in the International Journal of Odonatology. A team of Indian odonatologists discovered a new species of spreadwing damselfly, 'Lestes paloti', from the Western Ghats in Kerala in July 2026. Significance: The find resolves a decades-long misidentification with Lestes nodalis and is the first new Lestes species discovered in the Western Ghats in 97 years, taking Kerala's odonate species count to 192.
