Four More Indian Sites Enter UNESCO's Tentative List, Taking India's Total to 73
The Permanent Delegation of India to UNESCO announced the inclusion of four new cultural sites on the Tentative List of the World Heritage Convention: the Rangpur-Sivasagar Historic Ensemble (Assam), the Colonial Penal Settlement (Andaman Islands), Nicobarese Cultural Continuity (Nicobar Islands) and the Painted Haveli Towns of Shekhawati (Rajasthan). India's tentative list now stands at 73 sites, comprising 53 cultural, 17 natural and 3 mixed entries. This completes the picture from the Rangpur-Sivasagar listing tracked earlier this week: the Colonial Penal Settlement bundles Chatham, Viper and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose islands with the Cellular Jail, while Shekhawati's painted havelis span Sikar, Jhunjhunu and Churu districts.
UNESCO was founded in 1945 and is headquartered in Paris, France | The World Heritage Convention was adopted in 1972; a site must first spend at least one year on the Tentative List before nomination | Sivasagar in Assam was the capital of the Ahom kingdom
