Nek Chand Saini made Chandigarh's Rock Garden. A PWD road inspector, he built it secretly from 1957. He used industrial and urban waste, broken bangles and ceramics. It opened to the public in 1976 and covers about 40 acres near Sukhna Lake. Master Tara Singh was an Akali leader, Amrita Pritam a Punjabi poet, and Kaptan Singh Solanki the Governor of Punjab in 2015–16.
209.(B) Ruchi Ram Sahni
Ruchi Ram Sahni (1863–1948) taught chemistry at Government College, Lahore. He founded the Punjab Science Institute in 1885. He toured the province giving popular science lectures in Punjabi and Urdu. So he is the pioneer of science education in colonial Punjab. Nandalal Bose was a Bengal-school painter. Bhai Ram Singh was an architect. Sir Ganga Ram was an engineer-philanthropist of Lahore.
210.(D) Battle scenes from Sikh history
The painter Kirpal Singh (1923-1990) is remembered almost only for his large canvases of battle scenes from Sikh history. He painted the martyrdom of Guru Arjan Dev, Chamkaur, Muktsar, Banda Singh Bahadur's campaigns and the Anglo-Sikh wars. Many of them hang in the Central Sikh Museum at the Golden Temple, Amritsar. Most Punjabis picture those events through his images.

Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala ruled from 1900 to 1938. He attended the First Round Table Conference in London in 1930, as Chancellor of the Chamber of Princes. Its main outcome was the princes' willingness to join an all-India federation. He also captained the Indian cricket team and represented India at the League of Nations. His son Yadavindra Singh was the last ruling Maharaja of Patiala.

Dr Gopi Chand Bhargava of the Congress was the first Chief Minister of (East) Punjab after Independence. He took office on 15 August 1947. He served three separate short terms. Bhim Sen Sachar came after him in 1949. Partap Singh Kairon was Chief Minister from 1956 to 1964. Lachhman Singh Gill led a short-lived ministry in 1967–68, after the state was reorganised.
