Centre Notifies 40 Questions for Census 2027; First Caste Count Since Independence
On 14 August 2026 the Union Government notified 40 questions for the Population Enumeration (PE) phase of Census 2027. For the first time in independent India it includes a comprehensive caste enumeration - Question 10 is an open-ended SC/ST/Caste entry (last full caste census: 1931). The schedule captures demographic, educational and socio-economic data plus identifiers (Aadhaar, voter ID, driving licence, passport) and new fields like digital literacy and bank accounts. Census 2027 is India's first digital census. The PE phase starts 17 Aug 2026 in Ladakh and snowbound J&K, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh; the rest of India in February 2027.
