Captain Gurbachan Singh Salaria, PVC (born 29 November 1935 at Janwal, Shakargarh, now in Pakistan) was commissioned into 3rd Battalion, 1st Gorkha Rifles. On 5 December 1961, serving with the UN Operation in the Congo (ONUC) at Elizabethville, Katanga, he led a charge with khukris and a rocket launcher against a gendarmerie roadblock of about 150 men supported by armoured cars, killed 40 of them, was hit in the neck and died of his wounds. He was awarded the Param Vir Chakra posthumously — the only PVC ever awarded for action in a United Nations peacekeeping mission.
